Title

Letter from Henry to Em, March 2 & 9, 1878

Subject

Mail steamers; Boarding schools; Infant boys; Courtship; Temperance--United States

Description

Henry writes about the slow pace of the mail. Mattie seems to be doing better and Henry is glad that she and Harriet are both wholly in charge of the boarding school. He recounts a funny memory of Frank where he stowed away in a friend's buggy in order to learn how to court women. There is a good deal of excitement in San Francisco about Denis Kearney and the "Workingman's Party." He mentions the temperance meetings that happen there but he has not attended one yet.

Los Angeles March 2[--8--]9th /78
My dear Em,
Yours was the last letter
received. For some reason no
letter has arrived this week yet.
Perhaps I shall get it to-day. The
Seville Times which generally puts in
an appearance Wednesday & Thursday
has not arrived either so I suppose
there is snow in the mountains or
something. The China letters were
slow too this time. The "Alaska"
brought them and she is not a
remarkably fast steamer or in other
words as Mattie wrote "she is a slow
tub." I think likely we shall have
another China mail in a day or
two. I have just finished writing
to Mattie & Hattie. It does seem
nice that Mattie is so much
better. She seems to feel as though
she may be able to do considerable
work yet. I am glad she &
Hattie have the whole charge of the
Boarding School. It always seemed
as though it properly belonged to them.

Your Methodist minister must
be quite a different kind of a
man from Mr Moffat or Mr
Owen from what you write.
Mentioning the ministers makes
me think of something that Mr
Whitney told me about Frank. I
do not know whether you ever
heard of it or not I never did.
He said that one time when
there had been some kind of
a party at our house Frank
went and got [--the--] John Ross'
horse for him when he was
ready to go home. It was when
John Ross was very attentive to
Sarepta Bingham. After they got
into the buggy Frank jumped
in behind as they started off,
& when they got home much
to their surprise they [--Fr--] found
Frank there. He told them he
[--told them--] thought it was about
time he was beginning to court
& he had got in there to learn how.

Mr Whitney said that Frank's
"learning to court" was quite
a joke around town for awhile.
I am glad to know that Edward
has got his money from Parker
at last. I hardly expected he
could. I wonder if Sarah has
ever got her money back or
any part of it.
You see we are still
here. Dr Lowrie's last letter speaks
as though the matter was all
settled but making out the deeds
&c &c but Mr Nevin[--s--] still hears
nothing. He wrote a letter to
his Board a few days ago
that I guess will bring some
reply. I do not feel at all
worried about it more than I
feel sorry for the Nevins. It is a
nice climate here and I have
plenty to do. The last two days
have been rainy. I presume it
is the closing up rain for this
spring. People say that there is

usually rain the latter part of
March and then no more
until the following Nov or Dec.
They seem to be having a
good deal of excitement in San
Francisco with that man "Denis
Kearney" and his rabble calling
themselves the "Workingman's Party." I
don't Know what it will all
amount to in the End. Down
here everything is quiet as can
be. Just now they are having
temperance meetings. I have not
been to any of them as I am
always occupied evenings. A
Mr Allen has come down from
San Francisco who leads these meetings.
It is the Murphy movement & blue
ribbons are getting quite common. I
believe they have obtained over 500
names. We are all well. I guess
I have written to you that baby has
short dresses now and with his
stockings & shoes looks like quite a boy
looks large enough to be walking around.
People all say that he looks just like me.
Now I must stop Ever so much love to
you all from, Henry.

San
