Description

This author (most likely Martha), who has been in the missionary field for two years at the time, writes about the successes they have been having in converting people to Christianity. They are very hopeful about the situation. They also wish they could see Edward at the church he works at in Seville.

in his endeavors to bring his
father to a knowledge of the
saviour. One of the women
was or rather is a member of
the Woman's department in the
school her - was formerly a
slave in a family - who allowed
her in company with another
belonging to them to buy them-
selves off. These two afterwards
[--bought themselves off--] called them-
selves sisters and lived together
until the other was attacked
with dropsy when she found
her way to the hospital the
other coming to take care of
her -- The case was incurable
but they both there heard the
gospel there and both felt they
accepted Christ as their Saviour
The sick one received bap
tism in the Church there and
after her death which seemed a
very happy one the other entered
the school here and decided to

connect here. she seems very
earnest and very apt to learn
we do hope she will become
a good worker bye and bye
One of the others was from
Shek Lung a place about 40 miles
distant - and hear of Jesus from
a woman who joined the church
from that locality something
more than a year ago. There
are now five women at that
point who belong to the church
and I hope sometime there will
be a church organized in that
locality. I think there was a
German Missionary there some
time ago but he left the field
and since that time it has been
vacant. Then there was one
from the neighborhood occupied
by that cripple and his Mother of
whom Henry has already written.
An interesting feature to me
was this the four women who
joined us yesterday seemed the

direct fruits of the labors of 3 of our
bible women. Not one of them as
far as I know had ever received
any instruction from a foreigner
The fourth was the daughter in
law of the teach of a day school
quite a distance in the country
which is visited entirely by a
native bible woman The cong
regation was large but very orderly
Although it was a rainy disagrea-
ble day there were 80 commu -
nicants present. It is very nice
to see the improvement in the
order and decorum of our religious
services . I can see a marked
difference even during the two
years I have been here. I do hope
some time we can have a
native pastor It is so pleasant
to hear such encouraging news
from the Church in Layfayette
I do hope you were all able to be
present upon the Sabbath of which
you spoke. You speak of the new

Baptist Church in seville being
seated with Chairs I do not
believe I should like that arrange-
ment very well. I wish I could
be in the sabbath school at
Seville just one sabbath with
Edward as Supt. How delightful
it must be to see him in
Charge. I felt sure from the first
every one would like him
What a pleasant happy thought
we all have our work to do
God has given each a place
and may we not each one hope
we may have some souls given
us as our hire. I felt a sadness
yesterday as I thought I did not know
of one who had here been brought
to a knowledge of true saving knowl-
edge of the Saviour through my
instrumentality but I put away
the thought with another that God
had led some whom I love
very much to give themselves to
Jesus - and is that not enough to be

[Note: Continues sideways]
thankful for . It is not for us to know the result of our
labor duty is ours results Gods.
