Title

Section of Letter from Mattie

Subject

Women missionaries; Temperance and religion; Mail steamers

Description

Mattie talks about her students. Some of them are not part of the church yet, but nevertheless she and Hattie still have hope that they will turn to Christianity. She mentions the semimonthly steamer and the enormous size of these ships like "The Peking" for example which is over 6000 tons. She read about the temperance movement in the paper from home. She says they will send over $200 to help with her correspondence's land in Wooster.

Next Sabbath is our Communion
again. There are 9 in the school
whom we feel should come out and
join the church but the opposition
of friends is so great that I fear they
will hardly feel able to take up the
cross. Hattie says she can feel no
doubt they are Christians. One of them
is a member of the class which finishes
the course of study this year and the
only one who is not a church member
I do not know whether I told you
Lucy and myself connected with the
Church last [--Sabbath--] Communion
when there were 5 natives added one
of Hatties girls and the wife of one
of the elders of the Church. An old man
from the country with his son
were among the number and the old
gentleman seemed so earnest.
Monday- I will put a few words to
this this morning. Have concluded
not to study much to day, feel a little

like the ministers that Monday must
be a day of leisure. We received our
mail from home last Friday.
The papers came but no letters so I
imagine they are in San Francisco
awaiting the next steamer or perhaps
you thought we would not have a
semimonthly steamer. I believe
arrangements are now made where-
by the mail comes in regularly every
other Wednesday and leaves every
other Friday. We shall appreciate
it very much for our letters have been
very uncertain thus far since our
arrival. What immense steamers
they propose putting on the line
"The Peking" is something over
6000 tons and the [?Teddo?] not much
smaller. I saw your name in the
paper as taking part in one of the
Temperance meetings in Seville
I can hardly realize the general
commotion existing in America on
the Whiskey question. The papers are
full of it. I can not help thinking

it is under the guidance of the
Spirit and will do away with an im
mense evil in our country. I received
a letter in the last mail from Jennie
Blocker and she spoke of the very poor
health of Mr Barr. I should not think
he could preach much longer.
Our Church building is going on
as fast as possible but we can hardly
have patience to wait for its com-
pletion. The instrument which
was sent out for the school we
proposed to put into it instead but
our school Organ had given out en
tirely so I think we will be obliged
to rescind the motion and appro
priate the new arrival to its orig-
inal purpose. Oh I forgot to tell
you that the little girl we bought
is in my Sabbath school class and
is a bright little pupil. Her Grand
mother has been in this morning
and given me her account of the
lesson of yesterday which I was very
glad to have her do as I could thus

find out how much she understood. I will venture to
say I do not feel discouraged. Now I know Hattie and
Henry never wrote anything about the language scarcely
but you know one of my failings is to tell everything.
I feel sure I am often remembered in my precious Father's
prayers and it is a thought I love to cherish.
Now before this paper is full I must tell you I am so
very glad you have that land in your possession at
Wooster We propose to send by the next mail a check of
$200. {two hundred} which will fix matters up about as we
think they should be fixed. Now if you should want ever
to leave Seville you will have a foothold some where
else. I had hoped by this mail to write something
for the home Sabbath school but will not get it
accomplished. I will enclose in this a little paper,
having on it the verse Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and
Thou shalt be saved. The first thing I ever attempted to teach
in China. The literal translation is [?Suin?] {faith} 3 ye 2, so 3 {Jesus}
3 tsan 4 then, tak 5, {bes kan} {saved} Begin at the right hand corner
to read. Our little words prepositions &c are at discount in this

land you see. The little marks to us indicate the proper tone
of each syllable. I do hope you will be well and strong
this summer. The home letters are a joy to us the home
people can scarcely appreciate. Your loving
Mattie

Suin {faith} 3 ye 2,
so 3 {Jesus} 3 tsan 4 then,
tak 5,
