This letter is about a conference that Dr. Kerr spoke at about the temperance movement. Dr. Kerr presented a resolution and the other party stood up, attempting to not allow him to speak. The author is likely Martha Noyes Kerr, as she talks about what she and Dr. Kerr said as they were retiring for bed, recapping the events at the conference.

The Dr has been enabled
to do a great deal for the
work here, and I do hope
his life will be spared a long
time for now his experience
is of such value. He performed
an operation for stone yesterday
and Dr Broomall after wit
nessing it said she was more
than repaid for her trip down
from Shanghai already. I was
told by the Medical Fraternity
in Shanghai that Dr Kerr was
without a rival in regard to
operation for stone, he stood
[u] first [/u] in the medical world
his authority was the highest
and best. It does seem almost
wonderful his perfect simplicity
He has not a spark of assumsion
but his reputation is such
that these physicians here have
to listen to him. Then he is
such a worker in the temperance
cause At Shanghai a com
mitte of 15 was appointed
to report upon ways and
means to collect facts and
create a temperance sentiment
among the Chinese Re Re. The
Committee [--brought--] [--in--] rejected
this item which was one
among others, and it feel to
the ground of course. But the
next day Dr Kerr arose in
the Conference and said he
desired to present a resolution
upon the temperance question.
Although all resolutions had
been rejected by the Committee
Dr Nevins one of the Modera
tors immediately rose saying "with
all deference to Dr Kerr he
would say that after the
action of the Committee such
a resolution could not be brought
forward." The Dr stood calmly
looking at him, and cries of Dr
Kerr, Let Dr Kerr be heard began
The members of the opposing
party some of them rose to their
feet and in less than 2 minutes
a contest seemed imminent.
For and against but amid
it all the Dr stood perfectly
still calm and collected his
face pale but wholly self pos-
sessed until it was finally de
cided he should be heard when
he read his resolution Which
was that a committee should
be formed to collect informa
tion upon the temperance
question and report at the next
Conference. A very moderate
resolution. But you see the
English and German Missionaries
themselves use wine and beer
and that is the reason everything
about the question was carefully
excluded. But the subject was
pushed in after being shut down
by the committee to their great
surprize and that of the Conference
itself when its [u] moderator [/u] opposed it
He gained the day over both. It
was a grand achievement. I never
was so proud of him and there
was not a man or woman in
the audience who will forget it
When it was all over and he
quietly sat down a victor I felt
as though every bit of strength had
gone out of me. If he had uttered
a word or sat down he would
have lost it. He is Chairman
of this Committee that was appointed
and if he lives and is able he
will be at the next Conference
in its [--bef--] behalf. That evening
he slyly looked at me as we
were about retiring and said
It will not do to try such an ex
periment more than once will
it. I replied I guess it wont
but he answered, I gained it
this time. Yes but if you had
sat down you would not. I know
that he said, and then we
both laughed, and exulted over
it. You see he is on the
