Description

The author of this letter writes about an experience where a steamer was supposed to leave but the captain wanted to wait. They mention that the people they saw off should arrive around June 1st, their birthday, meaning the letter was written by Mattie. Harriet has been told to stay home for two years to rest and get better, and it is currently a concern that she will not be able to get her salary while at home.

which left Hong kong at
5 1/2 P.M. but just as we had
said good bye and were
coming away. the Capt came
on board and said they
would not sail until Thurs.
morning at 9 A.M. The Capt
wanted them to go ashore
for to day so he could get
"fixed up for them". It
was so evident he preferred
it that they took a satchel
and we all came off in
the Launch. She left us
at our steamer and went
on to the Basil Mission
where they will spend to
day. It is a very quiet
nice place German and
not expensive - so you see
how we celebrated your

birth day sent you a present
you will we trust receive
much improved in about
two months time The
Capt said he supposed they
would make the voyage in
[Illegible, page torn] from 42 to 45 days -
dating from Apr 2nd I do not
suppose they will stop in
Portland more than 10 days at
farthest so you can count
upon their arrival about the
1st of June. Perhaps they
will get there on my birth
day would not that be nice
You will be so glad to
know they are on the way
It will be such a long
time before we can
hear from them. But
it seems so providential
they could go on this str.

Hattie must not come
back too soon. Dr Wales
told her yesterday she
must stay 2 years. Dr Kerr
feels there is no reason she
should not get well so we
can all keep up good cour
age. She has seemed to feel
some doubt about drawing
her salary at home. I have
urged it upon her to do so
and you must add your
influence. She has been out
here since Jan. /68 and has
not saved a penny. 23 years
is paying her expenses home
without calling upon the Board
and it is the right thing she
should have her salary
while there. Dr Kerr has
put thousands of dollars into
the treasury and it will be a
pity if they can not let her

have partial salary until
she is strong. She said she
would feel better if they would
offer it to her - but they will
not do that I suppose. But I
do feel they will not feel the
least objection to her having
it. She looks "fat" but she
is not strong. That must only
come with time. You will
be so glad to see her. I do
hope you will have a quiet
summer. She must be
quiet. Now I must say
good bye. Hope you will
have many happy returns
of the day. . Wish we could
know how you spent the
day . You would have been
happy could you have known
what was going on on this
side. We feel as though our
numbers are very much lessened
