Letter Canton Sept 30th 1880
Dear Bro Edward,
I did not forget this
morning that it was your birth
day and thought of writing to
send my good wishes, but as
we were finishing breakfast
a goodly pile of papers came
in from America and they
claimed my attention then. I
had a letter from Father and
one from Sarah and for papers
3 observers and 2 "Christian[--s--]
at Work". I always glance
over the papers to see if there
is any news and then put
them away for evenings. This
forenoon I have been in my
study looking over Dr Happer's
translation of 2d Corinthians. We
find it needs a good deal of
changing. I am just through
with the eleventh chapter.
Had I written this morning
I would have said it was
rather a rainy gloomy looking
day but it has all cleared
off beautifully during the
forenoon and now at one-
o-clock PM the Sun is
shining brightly and everything
is as pleasant as can be
I hope your whole year will
be as bright. I am sorry
Sarah is going to lose so
much at Columbus. I hope
she will not have to work
so hard this year as she
has had to sometimes. Father
wrote that you were ploughing
for wheat in the field we
used to call the elder field.
How long it seems now to
look back to the time when
Father and you and I with
the oxen used to spend
days in log rolling in that
old field and then ploughed
it with two horses and a
couple of steers. I remember
too the job of corn planting
that Frank and Hattie & I
once did in that field when
Father and Mother were away
in New England and we
furrowed it out one way and
planted it from 9-o-clock
A M one day to the evening
of the next day.
Well my teacher has
come back and I must
soon [?drag?] my remarks to
a close as the preachers say.
By the way I preached
a little more than a week
ago and may get the sermon
copied to send home by the
time the mail leaves. They
are sent rather as an in-
dication of my loving thoughts
of the dear ones at home than
for any intrinsic [?want?]. I do
not get worried over a sermon
as much as I used to do. I
just work away at it as at
anything else until I get it done
and generally begin so as to have
time enough. About the middle
of the forenoon I got a note from
Hattie saying she had heard from
Swaton that Mattie was not at all
well. I am sorry to hear it but
hope she will be better soon.
We that is myself and family
expect to go to Lin Chau in
about two weeks. Mr & Mrs Sim-
mons of the Baptist Mission are
also expecting to get a boat and go in
company with us. Now good bye for
the present Your Aff Bro Henry.

We start for the country Oct 20 so shall not be here for the

今天上午我在书房里查看哈珀医生翻译的《哥林多后书》。
我们发现它需要大量的改变。
我刚看完第十一章。
如果我今天早上写的话，
我会说这是一个阴沉的阴雨天，
但在上午，
一切都已经美丽地散去，
现在下午一点，
阳光明媚，
一切都像我一样愉快希望你的一整年都一样光明。
我很抱歉莎拉会在哥伦布失去这么多。
我希望她今年不必像有时那样努力工作。
父亲写道，
你在我们过去称为老田的地里耕种小麦。
现在回首过去，
父亲和你和我带着牛在这片古老的田地里翻滚木头，
然后用两匹马和几头公牛犁地，
现在似乎有多久了。
我也记得当父亲和母亲不在新英格兰时，
弗兰克、海蒂和我曾经在那块地里做的玉米种植工作，
我们以一种方式把它犁出来，
从早上 9 点开始种植到晚上的第二天。
好吧，
我的老师回来了，
我必须尽快像传教士所说的那样结束我的发言。
顺便说一句，
我在一个多星期前讲道，
可能会在邮件离开时把讲道抄下来寄回家。
发送它们是为了表明我对家里亲人的爱意，
而不是出于任何内在的需要。
我不再像以前那样为布道担心了。
我只是像其他任何事情一样努力工作，
直到我完成它并且通常开始以便有足够的时间。
大约在中午的时候，
我收到了海蒂的便条，
说她从斯瓦顿那里听说玛蒂身体不太好。
我很遗憾听到这个消息，
但希望她很快会好起来。
我们是我自己和家人预计将在大约两周后去临州。
浸信会传道部的西蒙斯先生和夫人也希望得到一艘船和我们一起去。
