Description

Harriet is glad that Edward seems to be recovering. She asks about the university at Wooster and about a new editor that might publish a new paper in Seville. This new editor is a Democrat and she feels sorry for that. Harriet tells her brother that she will be a music teacher. Edward is thinking about publishing Harriet's journal and she thinks that some things should be fixed before doing so.

My dear Brother Edward ,
I feel as though
I must send you a few lines although
the time for writing for this mail
is rapidly slipping away. I am so
rejoiced to know that you are getting
so strong again. We can hardly
realize as we sit down with our fans
to read your letters that they were
written in the midst of snow & ice.
From what we hear you must have
had a very severe winter Mr Vrooman
says his brother writes from Michigan
with the thermometer at 27 below
I do hope they will put that railroad
through this time is it the one running
through our field. And how does
the university at Wooster come on.
I certainly would like to see you
in army blue I imagine you as
looking just about like Cyrus.
Tell me if you are teaching music
now "and how much". I am getting
to be a musical professor in "my poor
way" as Father Hughes would say
I sing a while every morning with
the little girls. Two of them as yet
cannot seem to get any idea of it.
I spent a long time with them the
other morning & finally succeeded in

getting them so that they could sing
Do & Re but not another step in the
scale. I am afraid they will never be
able to learn to sing. You speak of a
new Editor is he going to publish a paper
in Seville. I am sorry he is a Democrat
but if he is a real good O S Presbyterian
I will think about that instead of his
politics. You speak of publishing my
journal. I presume that long ere this
the sober second thought has come that
it would not be best. But if not and
you think it would afford qualification
to any of my friends & can find any
Editor who is not too much appalled at the
length to undertake such a job, you can
do just as you think best I certainly
never thought of such a thing or I would
have been more careful in writing it but
of course if it should be published you would
fix it over for me, & make all the corrections
you can think of. But I have no doubt
but by the time you have waded through
to the last page of what I sent from here
you will have reached the conclusion
that it would not be worthwhile to think
of it. The only reason in favor of it seems to
me to be that the route from California is
as yet comparatively new. If it should be
published I would be glad if you would
have a copy sent to "Mrs E M Newman
Springfield Md" as I fear she has not
received any of my letters. Henry has
had his own time making fun of me for
writing as I believe I did that the Great Republic
carried 5200 pounds instead of tons & of a
pear in California measuring after it was cut
open 16 inches one way & 14 the other Of course
it must have been the circumference but that
was what the lady told me & I did not stop
to think how "steep" it was. If they do publish
a paper in Seville of course we would want
to be subscribers.
[Written vertically]
And now good night. Your own loving sister Hattie.

OS Presbyterian
