Subject

Children; Families; Pictures; Aging; Political parties; Health; Walking

Description

Henry remarks on Clara's letters that she sent and how he just wrote a letter to both father and Mary. He writes on how little Prince, the horse, has grown up. Henry comments on Sarah having an easier time this year and Gilbert not going to a Democratic Administration. He says that in order to have issues run more smoothly a Republican must be in charge. William is quite grown now and is very healthy; he is speaking very little English and is speaking in Chinese sentences.

Canton Dec 22 1879
My dear sister Clara
I am indebted to you
for two letters one Oct 21st + the
other Nov 6th. I have just written
one letter to father and one
to Mary and do not know whether
I can spin out news enough to
write another or not but am
going to try. Some of your
letters speak of an Expected visit
from Mr + Mrs Locke. I shall
hope to hear about that visit
hereafter. I wish so much
that Uncle Augustus could
have come with them. I think
he and father both would have
enjoyed it so much. I saw
the picture that the girls got
of Cousin Gilbert and family
Gilbert and his wife and
Aunt Fay look very natural the
children have grown some.

I am glad that Em enjoys
her school so much. I hope
the school will be a success.
You speak also of a visit
from Johnnie Happer. I was
not surprised to hear that
he had walked up to Seville
for I thought that he was in
Earnest when he spoke about
it and I knew he was
quite a walker. I should'nt
wonder however if the road
seemed rather longer than he
expected it would. So little
Prince has grown up so as
to do some good. It seemed
strange to think of him
as a grown up horse. If
he is as pretty a horse as he
was a colt he will look
very nicely. And the old
"rocking chair" has gone to
college again has it I suppose

it seems natural and it
enjoys it but it does not
speak very well for it thor-
oughness that it has to keep
going back and going through
so many times. I presume
however it goes now as a
kind of tutor.
I am glad Sarah is
having an easier time this
year and that Gilbert is not
going to have a "Democratic
Administration" to suffer any
longer. With Republicans at
the head of affairs I think
matters will go on more smoothly.
You express the wish that
you could see Willie before he
grows into a "large boy". He
very nearly answers the de-
scription of a large boy now.
He eats plenty of rice and
beef and fruit and drinks a
great deal of milk so that he

keeps fat and strong and
happy. I wish you could all
see him in his boyhood
He is getting to surprise us
almost every day with some
new Chinese sentences that
he has learned but he speaks
very little English. He quite
falls in with Chinese ways of
doing things. The last time we
were in the country, wherever
we are chored, he wanted to
make long visits on [?shore?] with
his Amah.
I mentioned in one of
my letters that Dr [illegible] of
Foochow is here. We are going
to take a walk around the wall
day after to- morrow. She and
I will go and I do not yet
know whether any one Else or
not. It is a good long walk
but not as long by considerable as
Johnnie's walk from Wooster. I presumed
I have written before that Dr Sam Anderson
expects to leave for home before a great while
[Note: Letter continues sideways on page four]
as her health is poor in China + her physician [?recommended?] her
going home. She expects to leave sometime in January. Now I must close

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
Much love from Bella Willie and
your aff Bro -Henry

Fay
