Letter from Henry and Wife and Baby to Edward, December 20, 1879

Machinery industry; Christian sects; Marriage; Ocean travel

Henry writes to Edward and reports that John Happer only visited for a short while. He hopes that Edward can sell his machine. He went with Belle and her child to San-Ui and Chik-Hom. At Chik-Hom an elderly Chinese doctor was converted. He was delayed by a storm but arrived home in time to marry Mr. B. Cunningham and Miss Lillie Happer.

My dear Bro Edward
I forget each mail
who I wrote to the mail
before, so I think I will
answer the one I got which
was from you -- also a
sheet from mother . You
had seen John Happer when
you wrote but he seems
to have made a short
visit. I presume you
will see him once in a
while. He is a very pleasant
boy and I hope will get
along well in Wooster. I
am glad to know that Em
is so well pleased with her
situation. It is nice that
it is so near home to that
she can actually be at home

on the Sabbath. You also
write about your machine
I hope it will get into no-
tice so that manufacturers
will take it up and pay
you something handsome
for it. It certainly deserves
it. I should think it ought
to get into use as every
one seems to find it [?work?]
so satisfactorily. I have made
a country trip since I
wrote last. Belle + Baby went
also and we had a pleasant
time - went to San-Ui and
Chik-Hom. It seems nice
now to have a little church
to visit. There were 16
at the communion. 4 of
them Wesleyans and the
rest Presbyterians. These were
all, so far as I could find

out that were in reach.
There were none received
there this time but at Chik-
Hom one was received, an
old man about 50. He is
a Chinese doctor. I hope
to get another station
some distance beyond
Chik Hom before a great
while. I set a man to
work to hunt up a place
to rent when I was down
there. There was quite a
strong blow for two days
when we were away but
we were safely anchored
in a small canal at
San Ui and so got along
very nicely. Monday
morning Early we started
for home as there was
important business on had
for Wednesday morning I

had to get back to perform a
marriage ceremony on that
morning at 7-o-clock as
the parties wish to leave on
the steamer for Macao at
8-o-clock. I reached
home late Tuesday night
and so was in time
to perform the ceremony for
Mr [?T?].B. Cunningham head
of Messrs Russel[?fled?] (the only
American firm [illegible])
and Miss Lillie Happer.
People had been thinking
such a thing quite probable
for a long time , but no one
knew just when it would be
and they kept it very quiet.
The wedding was a quiet one
- no one present but the family
the American Consul + myself
who performed the ceremony.
Well my sheet is covered and
[illegible] finish to some one Else - Mother I guess
