Title
Letter from Henry to Sarah, August 16, 1879
Subject
Brothers and sisters; Weather; Lameness in Horses; Chinese
Description
Henry writes to Sarah hoping she hasn't tired of the company of boys and saying her siblings want to see her again. The Cincinnati Agency did not do as much for Edward as he hoped. Ned, a horse, has been sold after lameness since he was young. Henry plans to travel to the country. Willie can walk sometimes, and he speaks Chinese more often than English. Mattie and Hattie are staying with Dr. and Mrs. Graves, and Mrs. Kerr is leaving for San Francisco. Henry laments that Gilbert could not make it to California.

My dear Sister Sarah
It was good for sore
eyes to see a letter from you in
the letter which reached me from
home yesterday & though my eyes
are not sore it was good for them
too. I knew you had been very
busy the past year and had not
always a pleasant time with those
unruly [--b--] boys. I judge from the
tone of your letter however that
they got better before the end of the
year. I hope you did not get
all worn out with them but I
fear you did. Your sisters & brother
out here think it would be a
good thing if you could stay at
home and rest a year or so.
Tell Edward I got his letter for
which I am much obliged but am
sorry that Cincinnati Agency did not
do more for him.
We have had wonderful
summer here, have had very
little real hot weather. Mr Nye
who has been here 46 years says that
he has never known so cool a
summer before here. I presume
we shall have some hot weather
yet but it is getting so far along
in the season that it cannot
last very long.
So you have at last
sold good old honest Ned.
It was such a pity that he
strained himself so when he
was young. I hope the new
horse has good legs and that
you can keep them so. It
seems stange to think of [?Ruice?]
being grown up. He was such
a pretty little fellow when a
colt. I hope he will make as
good a horse as his coltship
promised.
I expect to go on a country
trip next week and be gone
15 days. Bella intended to go but
has given it up as there is
a liability to very hot weather at this
time of year. She is as well as
usual and Willie is better now
than he was for awhile when his
teeth were coming, in fact is
getting along finely. I am sorry to
say that he does not walk
alone yet unless he has something
to take hold of with his hands.
He is a large boy and his ancles
do not seem quite strong enough
yet. He scrambles up and
down stairs like a good fellow
and talks considerable Chinese
but makes not attempts now at
English. He eats rice like a
Chinaman.
Mattie & Hattie as they
will doubtless tell you are having
vacation now. They are spending
a few days now at their good
friends [--the--] Dr & Mrs Graves. Dr
Kerr told me last night that
Mrs Kerr had made all her
arrangements to leave this fall
and was perhaps by this time
on her way to San Francisco.
The Dr has been getting his furniture
all varnished up nicely and is
all ready for her.
I wrote to Mother on her
birth day that I had almost
finished my Concordance. I
have now finished it, excepting
to read it over after the teacher
has it all copied. I preach about
4 times a week. I do not know
just what I will do next but
rather think I will go to writing
sermons in Chinese.
Then I think I have
told about all the news that
there are. You know there is
not much change here except
when some distinguished person
like Gen Grant comes along. I
suppose by this time he must be
about starting for S F if he has
not already. I am sorry it did
not happen so that Gilbert could
have that trip to California. Now Good
bye for this time. Bella joins with me
in sending love and so would little Willie
if he was old enough
Your aff Brother
Henry.
