In this letter to his sister Emily, Henry writes about a convert in Dr. Happer's school, Mo Hing, who is now a scholar in Los Angeles. Henry traveled to Chik-Hom to sell books. Later he held a communion service in San-Ui, which attracted some converts. He and Mo Hing went to a temple to sell books and Henry's umbrella was stolen. He lists the church's recent conversions and new associations. He saw Bella and Willie when he returned to Canton.

My dear sister Em
I was glad to find that
the mail had not yet left, when I
got back from my country trip so that
I still have the opportunity of writing
I supposed that this time the mail
[illegible] go without any letter from me.
I think I was about starting on my
country trip when I wrote before. I
was gone 15 days. I do not remember
whether I wrote that [u]Mo Hing[/u] one of
the Chinese Scholars at Los Angelos
but who is now in Dr Happer's school
was going with me. He was one of
the best boys we had in school
there and I am very glad that
he feels like preaching to his country-
men. He proved to be very good
help. I left the 20th of August and
went to the farthest station Chik-Hom
for the Sabbath. On Friday we had
a good time at a market village
where we sold a good many books
and preached also. On Saturday
we walked a long distance to another
market village and sole some books but
not so many as on the day previous.
Reached our boat again about three
o-clock and were quite ready to rest.
The next day was Sabbath and
we had the communion service with a
very few present just as its used
to be at [u]San[/u] Ui. There were the
native preacher and door Keeper + one
more who live there and Mo Hing
and myself five in all. Beside there
there were present three boys and
three men. One of those present had
applied for baptism but he had heard
the gospel for so short a time that
he was advised to wait for further
instruction. We had a sort of bible
class before the regular services. One
present an old man whose hair
was white seemed to be much
interested in all that he saw and
heard. After it was all over he
said that when he listened to
the explanation of the ordinance it
was very good, and that he was
much pleased with what he heard
and saw but for a [u]Chinaman[/u]
it would be a very difficult
matter to walk away from all
their old customs. He staid two
hours longer and listened to the
preaching in the Chapel. There was
still another young man who says
that he is personally pleased with the
doctrine but that his relatives would
greatly oppose his making any open
profession of it. Towards evening
Mo Hing and I went and preached
on the street in front of a large
temple to quite a crowd of people
who paid very good attention. Monday
was market day. I went to sell
books by the large temple where we
had preached the night before. After
selling two or three books I turned
to look for my umbrella which I had
leaned against the building in a corner
by my side and lo! it was not
there. I got the police to look for
it with very little expectation however
that they would find it. That night
they had not found it but I learned
a few days after at San Ui that
they found it at last in an old-
pawn shop. The pawnbroker however
refused to give it up even though
the assistant offered to give him what
he paid for it. I think I shall
probably get it again. It was not
a specially valuable umbrella but it was
a good large one which I got in Los Angelos
and a very good protection against the
Sun. I got me a Chinese umbrella
for 12 cents and went on my
way rejoicing . Stopping at some villages
on the way we reached San Ui Thursday
evening and spent Friday Saturday Sunday
and Monday there. Had a very pleasant
time and good meetings. Two men
united with the church on examination
which makes 4 so far this year.
One child was also baptized and the
elder whom we elected at the last
Communion was ordained. There were
more present at the meetings and
on the Sabbath than there have ever
been before. 17 [?communed?]. Of these
2 were mentors of the Wesleyan Church
All the mentors that could be were
present except one and I could not
learn why he was not there. The
work there seems very Encouraging +
I trust will continue to be so. I
do not think the prayer that has been
asked for this station has been in vain
I reached Canton safely Wednesday
noon just in time to avoid a heavy
shower. Found all well - Bella looking
rather better than when I left, and little
Willie walking about the house. They had
taken a good deal of pains teaching him and
now he goes pretty much where he likes on
his feet and talks a good deal of Chinese.
He is an early bird-wakes up at daylight and
pulls us to make us up and then says Mamma Papa

[u]tse chau[/u]. Tso Shau means [u]good morning[u] His talk is all [u]in[/u] Chinese.

I enclose a letter from Mattie which will speak for itself. She has got through the
