Henry writes to his mother about all the letters he had been receiving from other family members. The weather has been seemingly mild so far. The Fourth of July passed quickly, the only thing to celebrate it was that the Americans called on the US Consul. Henry just bought twenty chickens and is excited to no longer have to buy eggs. Willie's "stomach teeth" (canine teeth) are starting to come in and he is also close to walking.

Dr Happer just now is having a good deal of trouble
with his eyes.
Canton July 16th 1879
My dear Mother
The last mail from
America came last Thursday
and I got a nice lot of letters
from home, one from you [--fr--]
one from [--Mother--] Edward, one
from Em and one from Clara.
I wish I could send answers
to them all but will answer yours
this time and write to the others
again. The letters for the mail before
the last for some reason missed
of getting here so we got the letters
for two mails this time. It happened
that I was going down to see Mattie
& Hattie that afternoon and the letters
came just before I started so when
I got there I found them busy reading
their letters. I read with interest all
you write about the neighbors whom
I used to know &c. I am glad
Edward[--s--] finds Bertie Smith such
good help. It will be quite convenient
for you & I suppose a good thing for Bertie.
You write of [u] George [/u] Miller. I suppose

it is the man whom we used to
call [u] Clinton [/u] Miller but do not feel
quite sure. It seems too bad that
he should be treated so. Please give
my warmest regards to Mr & Mrs Whiteride
when you see them. I was glad to hear
about them. Em speaks of the thermometer
having been above 90° in the sitting
room. That is ahead of us here
I have not seen it this summer
above 87 in our parlor yet although
it has for several weeks in the
day time been ordinarily above
80° in the house often 84 to 86.
Am glad that Edward's planters
continue to give good satisfaction
Ask [u] Mary [/u] "if they study any
at that school that she goes to."
[u] Of [/u] [u] course [/u] [u] they [/u] [u] do [/u]. I should
like to see her discharging
the duties of a "school marm"
I have a very distinct remem-
brance of her rosy cheeks as
they appeared so faithfully over
that long griddle every morning,
nor have I forgotten the [u] first class [/u]

cakes we got one morning. I think
of her in other connections too. The
4th of July passed off very quietly
here. The only thing to mark it
was that the Americans called
on the US Consul like good
citizens, not in a body, but
every one at his own leisure.
Em writes about their accident
with the buggy in Wooster. It was
fortunate that they got old Fred
stopped as well as they did.
We have had an unusually
comfortable summer here so far,
have had a good deal of rain
which has kept the air cool
For a large part of June and
the first part of July there was
hardly a day that it did not rain
more or less. Now it seems to be
settled clear weather. If it keeps so
for a few[--s--] days it will undoubtedly
get quite hot.
We are getting quite do-
mestic in the way of getting ani-
mals about us. We have a dog
Rover who [u] lives [/u] here and [u] boards [/u] at

Dr Happers. He used to belong to
this Church, then they girls had
him for some time & then Johnny
Happer. But when Johnny brought
him home remembered his old place
of living and so he spends most
of his time here and seems very
much like [u] our [/u] dog. Then we have
a cat & kitty and yesterday we
bought a lot of chickens. I got a
man to make a "[u] henery [/u]" to keep them
in and yesterday bought 20 fowls,
so I expect we shall have good
fresh eggs which we do not always
get in the hot weather when we
buy them. I have no doubt they will
furnish a good deal of amusement
for Willie. He was standing holding
to the fence yesterday & watching
them a good while. He is just now
not very well as his "stomach teeth" are
just coming. He does not walk only as
he holds on with his hands. In that way
he does very well can go up and down
stairs, is getting to talk considerably but
almost entirely in Chinese. Bella is well
& seems to enjoy living here, teaches some
of the boys English in the school (2 of them) &
teaches all to sing. Now I must say
good-bye for this time. All send love

take his place preaching to the Chinese Ch in his absence
