Letter from Henry to Edward, July 31, 1879

Sabbath schools; Missionaries; Vision disorders; Children of missionaries

Henry writes to Edward and says he has received a letter from his father and Clara. A letter from Edward too about the Sabbath School Convention in Akron. Henry heard that Andrew Happer went to a Sabbath school in Shanghai, possibly the largest in China. Everyone hopes he will consider becoming a missionary. Willie has teeth coming in, is learning to walk, and speaks in Chinese.

Canton July 31st 1879

My dear Bro Edward
The mail before the
last brought your good long letter
and yesterday about 4 PM Father's
+ Clara's dated June 23 came
in. I do not remember who I
wrote to last time but think it
was Mother and so this time
I am going to write to my "big
brother" Your letter gave some
account of the SS Convention
at Akron which must have
been quite interesting. I expect
they had a grand time at
Yosemite this year. I wonder
when the Chinese will get up
Enthusiasm enough for a Sabbath
School Convention. Andrew Happer
wrote that in Shanghai he went
into Mr Farnham's Sabbath School
and there were 286 scholars

I guess that is the largest Sabbath
School in China. Andrew was
very much pleased with it. I
[illegible] we have written that he
has at last Entered the service
of the Customs and gone to
Peking. He told Mr Henry that
he would be very glad to
join the mission if he could
see his way clear to do so.
He feels that he could not con-
scientiously be ordained as a
minister. Mrs Happer said that
after he left in his letter he
asked them to pray for him
that he might sometime see
his very clear to come back
and he a missionary. No
missionary in Canton has
been more faithful in their
work for the last two years
than Andrew Happer and
we would all be glad to

have him here but may be
his place is Elsewhere. Good
men are certainly needed
badly Enough in business circles
in this part of the world.
Dr Happer has been greatly
trouble with his eyes for the
last month - has kept in a
dark room and seen scarcely
any one outside of his own
family . The family felt it
nearly at the same time.
It was prayer meeting
there last night but the Dr
was not in the meeting.
We are having summer weather
now. see through June it was
very cool but I presume for
about six months now we
shall find it hot enough. We
are all getting along with the

summer very well however.
Baby feels the heat a good
deal - has been [?cutting?] his
stomach [?tEeth?] but they are through
now and he feels better. He does
not walk yet. He is a slow
boy in that way. He can clamber
up and down stairs and talks
considerably but [u]all[/u] in Chinese.
I expect to learn a good deal
of Chinese from him as he gets
older. Bella is about as usual
Sarah Anderson seems to be well
now - is still here but expects to go
North in about 3 weeks
We are looking for Mrs
Kerr now before a great while
I am glad you had a visit
from Mr Leyenbarger and am
glad they are coming back. I
think Mrs L will find Chefoo
a much more favorable place for
her health than Ningpo. Now I
must stop for this time. Next mail
