Canton July 1st 1879
My dear Father
I have thought
of you a good many
times to-day remembering
that it is your 75th birth
day. It is three-o-clock
in the afternoon here and
so this letter will be fin-
ished before on your side
of the world you are up
on the morning of July 1st
I am therefore in good time
writing my best wishes for
you to-day and all the
days of another year if
God spares your life as I
hope he will for this and
many years to come. I

2
wish I could just for to-
day if no longer, blot out
the intervening space and
be with you in the old
house on the hill. I pre-
sume all of the family
who are on that side of
the water are at home to-
day. But whether here or
there or wherever they may
be I am sure your chil-
dren are all remembering
their father to-day, lovingly
tenderly, prayerfully. It is a
beautiful day here. After
having rain [?everyday?] for
more than half a month
to-day has come out
clear and bright. This
morning Bella and I
and little Willie took a

3
long boat ride. We wanted
to get some peaches (which
are very plenty just now)
for preserving and so went
three miles down the river.
The rains had swollen the
river so much that now
at high tide the streets near
the river were flooded so
we could not all go ashore
I took off my shoes and
stockings and Chinese
fashion waded through the
streets till I got to where
they were too high to be
flooded bought the peaches
and got them back to the
boat. Baby had a good
time eating them until we
thought he had eaten enough.
He did not think so himself

4
and thought his Papa and
Mamma were rather hard
hearted I expect not to let
him have all he could eat.
He eats rice now like a
little Chinaman, has had
a good time generally of
late although his teeth trouble
him a little now and
then. On our way back we
stopped at Kuk Fan and
I saw Mattie & Hattie for
a short time. Mattie has
just sent up an invitation
for Bella and I to take
tea with them to-night so
you can think of us as
having been all together
on the evening of your birth-
day. Right here I will say that
Bella wishes me to send you
her love & best wishes to-day.

We missed of getting any home letters by the last mail. They
missed getting [?been?] in some way.

Mattie & Hattie
