Letter from Henry to Mother, February 4, 1879
Subject
Health; Travel; Deciduous teeth; Missions--Study and teaching
Description
Henry writes to his mother about getting back to Canton after having been away. The house was ready for them and they've transitioned back nicely into home and mission work. Henry is working with Mr. Henry to build another schoolhouse and he is excited for the years to come. Bella is learning the language so she might begin teaching soon. He writes that Mattie is also doing well.

Canton Feb 4th 1879
My dear Mother
I was very glad yesterday
to get Father's & Edward's letters &
specially glad to know that you
are feeling so well. I was sorry
to learn that they were having so
much trouble in Columbus. It
must cause them all a great
deal of anxiety. From Edward's
account "Watch" must have
come about as near the end
of his existence as he could and
not get there entirely. Edward
expresses the hope that the boxe
got to San Francisco in time for
Dr Kerr to take it with him. I
thought I wrote but suppose I did
not from S F that the box got
to S F just in time for me to
get it. I got in Monday forenoon
& we left Tuesday so I brought
it. I guess I wrote last time that
the clothes you sent were just
what I wanted & will last me a long time hence
We are getting settled down
nicely. The house had all been
painted inside & out and was
all ready for us to go into
when we came back. We had
bought some pretty [?Chamois?] in
Sacramento which look very
pretty. Jan 29th the day on
which 3 years ago we were
married we invited all the
missionaries who could come
and one or two other friends and
had quite a large gathering
and a pleasant evening.
It seems to us both as father
suggests pleasant to be settled
down without the expectation of
having to move for awhile.
We are well all but baby. He
has had a good deal of trouble
with his teeth for the last two or
three weeks. Seems somewhat
better but I suppose will not
be himself exactly until his
teeth get through.
I have my old work
back again, my old chapel,
a day school, and the country
stations of San Ui & Chik-Hom.
It seems real nice to be back
here again. We expect to make
a country trip soon, probably
early next week if possible.
Bella expects to go and I think
will enjoy it very much. We hope baby may
be well enough to go too but shall
be guided somewhat by what
Dr Kerr says. It is beautiful
weather now if it will only remain
so. I expect to find the San
Ui station quite encouraging.
Last year Mr Henry [--a--] rented
a large temple for 20 years at
about $20 per year. There
is room back of the temple
for a school house and
the Mission have authorized
the money to build it so I shall
get the thing started as soon
as I can. The house will only
cost about $160. This is the
station that I used to ask so
many people to pray for when I
was at home. Mr Henry tells me
that there are 4 that he knows
of that wish to be baptized when
we go down, and I heard to-day
of another woman who says she
is going to apply for baptism. I
hope to be able to do much more the
coming ten years than I did before.
It seems as though I was only just
ready for work and that I have
something definite ahead and I
feel so strong & well, do not
feel tired as I used to. I intend
to be careful & not overdo.
Bella will learn the
Chinese I think quite correctly. She
seems to get the tones very well &
she wants to have a school as soon
as she can.
The girls seem well. Mattie
has to be careful but is so much
better than I ever expected to see
her that I feel real thankful.
Now good bye for this
time, love from us all
Your Aff Son
Henry.

San Ui & Chik-Hom
