Canton June 13th 1874
My dear Father
I presume you
will be quite taken by
surprise to hear from Canton
again so soon as it is only
6 days since we sent out
last letters. The steamer made
a quick passage over from San-
Francisco and they are sending
her out again a hurry.
We have not got the letters yet
but they will come up from
Hong Kong to day as the American
steamer was seen coming into the
harbor just as the Canton str
left Hong Kong on Saturday. We
are all in usual health but
the hot weather is here now

which takes the energy out of
us. Miss Shaw is quite unwell
so that she can do little and
Lillie Happer has gone to Japan
so that it throws more work
upon Hattie than she ought to
have but I hope she will get
through it.
Our Communion was
two weeks ago. There [--were two--] were
two received by baptism. Their
Communion at the other end was
yesterday. There were two baptised
there. One of the church
members died last week. It
was quite an interesting girl.
She was about 17 years old.
Miss Shaw got acquainted with
the family in her visits. They
were so utterly shiftless and
untidy that we have always

called them the "dirty family"
The mother joined the church and
afterward this daughter last year.
She was a very earnest whole
souled girl and very faithful. She
seemed the best of the family. She
met with a good deal of reviling
from the neighbors but was faithful
in her testimony for the Master not-
withstanding. Miss Shaw employed her
to sew for her and she was improving
and getting along very well when
she was suddenly taken sick and
in about a week died. More than
once she and her mother [--ar--] have
gone without food all day Sunday
rather than work to get it and then
the girl would come to her work
on Monday and say nothing to anybody
about it. I do not suppose that she
ever did this after Miss Shaw got
to know how very destitute they were
sometimes. They say that when she
was sewing she would often put down

her work and go into an adjoining
room to pray. I cannot in a short
letter tell all about her, but she was
happy in the near prospect of death
and tried to comfort her father
and mother before she died. None
of us have a doubt but that
she is now with Jesus himself
where they hunger and thirst no
more. The little girl "Shung"
about whom I wrote in the "Foreign
Missionary" has been having a
hard time. I hope that in some
way [--brght--] brighter days are before her
but we do not know just how matters
will turn. She is in our house now
and so long as she and her mother wish
her to be here. Nothing less than
an official order from the US Consul
shall taker her away. We shall be
able to write about her I hope more sat-
isfactorily after awhile. But I must stop
this morning
With very much love to all
Your Aff Son
-- Henry --
