Sacramento
My dear sister Clara Oct 5th 1878
I find I have no
paper in my desk but
sermon paper and only
a steel pen and so
must write with these
implements this morning.
It has been so long since
I have used a steel pen that
I can hardly use this one
It seems to scratch so.
I presume I wrote in my
last that I was going to San-
Francisco. I did go and
was gone just a week and
had a delightful time. I
went to San Rafael for the
Sabbath where the Presbytery
of Benicia was holding its
sermons. They had a
mission meeting Sabbath
evening addressed by Dr
Verbeck (Reformed Board)

who has just returned from
Japan, having been a mission-
ary there 18 years and your
brother. I spoke first and
he followed. The night was
dark and rainy which pre-
vented a good many from
coming but we had a very
pleasant meeting and I
hope good was done. Monday
I went over to San Francisco
and remained there until
Friday morning attending
the meetings of the Synod
of the Pacific. Tuesday noon
a large number of mission-
aries set sail in the
good ship "City of Peking"
for [--Canton--] China, Siam,
Japan. There were some
30 in all. Among them
good Bro Wilson with I
went out to China. His

wife cannot go back for a
year or two yet and so
he is going by himself. Three
young ladies are with him
two are to go to Chieng Mai
and one to remain in
Bang Kok. They seem like
very [--met--] nice young ladies.
Two are from Oxford Seminary
and one is from Wheeling.
All of them had met Hattie
Then there was a Mr Duffus &
his wife whom I knew well
and a Miss Ricketts who
goes out with them, & a
number of others. I thought
their sailing at the wharf
was just as nice as it could
be. Quite a number of Chris-
tian friends had gone to the
ship to see them off. The
farewells had been said &
the friends were gathered on
the wharf and quite a murder

of friends of other passengers, a
good many Chinese &c &c
We had our hats off and our
handkerchiefs in our hands
as the huge vessel commenced
to move along from her
moorings. Just then some one
one the wharf started "All hail
the power of Jesus' name." It
was taken up by those on the wharf
& those on the steamer & sung as it would
be sung under such circumstances
I thought that would be such
a glorious farewell. But they
finished the last verse and still
the great steamer was not
all away and so some one
started "Shall we gather at the River"
Well I thought that will be a
beautiful closing. It was finished
and the stem of the great steamer
had not cleared the wharf.
Then some one began "Praise
God from whom all blessings flow"
and it seemed to make it all
as complete as anything could
be and so the last memory of
the United States to these missionaries
[Written vertically on the fourth page]
will be the notes of that grand old doxology which some
one has said is good enough "to be sung in heaven"

[Written vertically on the first page]
Now I must close and write a letter to Edward
over so much love
to all from Henry

Verbeck(改革委员会)
