August 6th 1879

My dear Mother
I must write you
a few lines this evening
to send my best wishes
on this your 69th birth
day. God has been kind
to us children in sparing
our father + Mother so long
and wherever we are I
am sure we all in thought
return lovingly and often
to the home on the hill
where our childhood was
spent. I feel thankful for
the measure of health you
Enjoy and hope it may be
long continued. I suppose
Sarah is at home now and
so all the family on that
side of the world are together

and so I think of you
to night. It has not been
a remarkably bright day on
this side of the world as
it has rained a good deal
and very hard about noon
However it stopped in time
for us to go to the Mission-
ary Conference at five-o-clock.
We went down on a boat
which Mr Cunningham
(of whom I doubt not you
have heard from the girls)
sent over for the Happer's
and us. This Evening there
was Mrs Happer Lillie +
Verdie. Bella + her sister
and myself. Coming back
we had also Mattie + Hattie
a part of the way so you
see WE had quite a boat

load. Mr Cunningham
takes us down to meeting +
back every Sabbath with the
Happer family so we have
a very pleasant way of
getting to meeting.
We are all well
now and getting along
nicely through the summer.
It has been an unusually
cool one so far. Willie seems
to be feeling quite well now
has a good appetite but I
am sorry to say does not
walk by himself. He likes
to walk when led or so
long as he can have his
hands on something but
seems afraid to try to
balance himself without [--something--]
taking hold of something. I
expect he will be trotting about
before very long. He Knows a good

many Chinese words but
does not try to say much
in English.
I am getting almost
through with the main work
of my concordance. Have about
150 pages yet to go over the
last of 2645 pages. My teacher
has over 1700 pages copied +
will get it all done I think be-
fore the End of the year. Then
I must read it over to see
that it is all right and then
it is ready to be printed
Now I must close for
to night. Bella wishes me
to send her love to you as
does also Dr Anderson who
is with us now and is ex-
pecting to return to Shanghai in
a few weeks. Willie would send
his love I know if he was large enough
to understand about it.
Much love also from Your Aff Son
--Henry --

Mattie + Hattie
