Sacramento Aug 24th
1878
My dear Clara
I was glad to get
Father's letter and yours yesterday,
though sorry to know that father
was unwell. I do not remember
whether I wrote to Sarah that I
spent last Sabbath at Elk Grove &
preached Sabbath day and helped
pick peaches an Monday. I
stopped with one of the elders
named Kerr who lives on a
fruit ranch. As I did not
leave till 2-o-clock PM, I
went out with him and his
hired man in the forenoon to
pick peaches. I wish you
could have seen some of the
trees, great large peaches--one
made a handful.
Now I think of it I
will say put my clothes in with
the girls box. I will not need
them until I get to China and
they will feel happy I am sure in that box.

The box need not stop here
but had better be sent straight
to San Francisco in care of
Dr Kerr 800 Stockton St.
I think you must
have had a good time at
that teachers Institute from
the account you give of it.
I have just been down to
the depot to see Mr Wherry
and his family. They are on
their way back to China ex-
pect to leave S F the first
of next month. They had
with them a young lady going
out to join Miss Downing.
Her name is Anderson. They
had also three little children.
As I am away from home
at any rate I feel as though
I shall be glad to be at
work in China when the time

comes. We are all very well. I
think Bella will feel stronger now
that cool weather is coming on
and the baby is weaned. He
has two more teeth now, four
above and four below. He
will take a piece of beef steak
in his hands and pull it off
with his teeth until he gets it
pretty much all disposed of.
He will eat a cracker or piece
of bread or cake without any
difficulty. Mr Henry told me
that the Happer girls would be
going back in the November
steamer. If you should be
writing to them say that we
would be very glad to have
their company. I suppose there
will be missionaries now going
by every steamer
To change the subject
I wonder if I have ever written
about the machine I have heard

of, used in California that
goes through the wheat field, cuts
the heads off threshes them and
leaves the wheat in bags, and
the straw on the ground. It is
drawn by 16 horses & will go
over 50 acres in a day. They
say they have them made so
as to go by steam. Their threshing
machines are very large. I saw
a notice of one the other day
that threshed 4,400 bushels in
one day.
Now I must stop. I
often think of you all. We
are still having a good sized
school, and best of all some
of these boys expect to apply for
baptism at the next communion
I think there will be at least 4
and perhaps more. I have a
good bible of class of 15 every
evening and the native assistant
also teaches them half an hour.
A great deal of love to
you all from Your aff
Henry
