Letter from Henry to Father, October 18, 1878

Henry writes to his father about Edward's letter concerning his salary. He says that they will be leaving for San Francisco in the next month and travel on towards Tokyo by December. Little Willie is doing well. He relates the story of Mr. Charles Preston's father and how the man and his friend prayed for the conversion of the world, once a week, for more than forty years.

Sacramento Oct 18th
1878
My dear Father [Note: written on top of Brother]
I have nothing but
an old steel pen to write
with this morning but will
try and do the best I can
with it. I got Edward's letter
only a few minutes ago. I
usually get them Friday
morning about 11-o-clock
and answer before the
three-o-clock mail leaves
for the East in the afternoon
Last week something inter-
fered so that I did not get
my letter off until Saturday
Edward wrote to me something
about the trouble in getting
Mr Elliotts salary. It was
certainly a very singular
thing to tax Mrs Elliott for
her husband's support. I do
not see what the church will
do but I suppose they will
get along some way as they
have done

As Edward's does not speak
particular of your sickness
I take it for granted that
you are better again. The
time is drawing on for us to
leave. I presume in about
4 weeks more, we shall be
leaving for San Francisco and
soon after for China. I see
the "[u] City of Tokio [/u]" is advertised
for Dec 3d So if there is no
change we shall be moving
away from the wharf at noon
on that day. How much I
would like to see you all before
starting but that I suppose
cannot be. And I would like
so much to have you see
little "Willie". He is getting to
look like quite a boy almost
out of babyhood. I took him
out this morning and gave
him a long ride in his little
carriage. I do not know whether
I may not have written before
that when he hears the dogs bark

before he gets up in the morning
he will try to initiate them.
Last Thursday I went down
to San Francisco to take a
Chinese woman down to
the Woman's Home. I came
back the same day leaving
at 4-o-clock P.M.
I do not know
exactly what Dr Kerr will do
when Dr Loomis comes back.
He talks some of taking the
interpretership for the Chinese
consulate in San Francisco.
I preached for Mr Rice
last Sabbath. He remained awhile
in San Francisco after the meeting
of Synod was closed. His wife's
parents live there. We lived
at their house with his [?god?]
mother in the absence of
the rest of the members of
the family
I do not know as I ever
written that I saw Walter Preston
while at Synod. He reached S F on
his way to join his mother in Oregon
And this makes me think of a letter

that I got awhile ago from Mr
Charles Preston's father. He states
one fact that is interesting as
follows "Allow me to relate an
incident that has often come to
my mind. My Father and another
elder in the Pres church used
to meet together once a week to
pray for the conversion of the
world and on my occasional
visits at home I had the
pleasure of meeting with them
This prayer meeting was un-
interrupted for more than forty
years to [u] my knowledge [/u]. And
it has seemed to me a legitimate
question to ask, What connection
between those prayers and the
fact of my son's being a missionary
to carry the gospel to China?"
Edward speaks about his
planters. I hope he will be
able to make arrangements
that are satisfactory to him.
Now I must close. I
send much love to you
all. In about [?24?] months, I
hope to see that portion of the family at
