Jerusalem April 12th 1876
My dear Mother,
I am going to write this
letter to you on this pretty paper
which we found here in Jerusalem
and which seems very appropriate
for letters sent from here. The picture
at the top is the Mosque of Omar

It stands on Mount Moriah just
where the old temple stood. The whole
inclosure is about one eighth of the
present city. In the inside of the
building with the dome is a rock
which, I believe they say, is some
forty feet high and it is claimed
that this is the very spot where
Abraham was on the point of
offering up his son Isaac. It was
at any rate on this hill somewhere.
It seems almost too low to be

called a mountain. The lower
picture is a very good view of the
Mount of Olives and the side pic-
tures are buildings in Jerusalem.
I began this letter in Jerusalem
but am finishing it on board the
French steamer "Labourdonnais." We
left Alexandria in Egypt yesterday.
The sea was beautifully smooth all
day yesterday but last night and
this morning there is more breeze
enough to make Bella and some
of the other passengers somewhat
sea sick so that our table this morning
was not more than half filled. The
steamer has all the passengers it will
accommodate. We were at Alexandria
all day Sunday & Monday. Sunday
we went ashore and heard a very
good sermon from a Scotch Monister
Dr Yule. Monday we went ashore
again after breakfast to the house
of Rev S C Ewing a missionary of
the United Presbyterian Board to whom
Mr Nevin of Canton had given us a letter

of introduction. Miss Campbell of
the same mission went with us to
call on Dr Yule, where we staid until
nearly 3-o-clock having accepted
a very cordial invitation to stay un-
til after dinner. We found them very
pleasant people and enjoyed our visit.
After dinner we got a carriage and
drove to see some places of interest
in the city, saw where the apostle
Mark was buried, the church where
Athanasius preached. Cleopatra's
needle and Pompey's pillar. It was
a general holiday in the city and
the streets were crowded so that we
had a good chance to see the people.
We came back to Mr Ewings at
dark where we took tea and
spent the evening, going on board
the steamer at 9-o-clock, feeling
that we had enjoyed a very pleas-
ant day.
Now I must close what
I presume is the last letter I shall
write to you before reaching home myself
With very much love,
Your aff Son
Henry.
