Title
Unsigned Poem
Subject
Death; Heaven; Religious poetry--American
Description
This poem, most likely by Harriet as indicated by the handwriting, is about death and heaven. It describes heaven as a safe place and contrasts it with pain on Earth. The poem also mentions the inevitability of death. Finally, it states that those that remain on Earth are sad for the loss, but happy for the dead person that is now in heaven.

Tears for our Ruler slain
Death's seal is on thy brow
Long weary days of pain are o'er
Thy sleep is dreamless now
____________
A nations earnest prayers
Thy fearless courage brace
Nor human skil nor tenderest care
Could save thee from the grace
____________
In deepest sadness now
We bow to Heaven's decree
From shore to shore a nation's tears
Are falling now for thee.
_______
Yet to our mourning hearts
With sadness joy is given
We know that evermore for thee
Remains the rest of Heaven
___________
There safe within the veil
Secure from every ill
Beyond the need of earthly care
Our love enfolds thee still
_______
