Letter from Henry to Edward, April 12, 1876

Henry writes to Edward from Jerusalem. He rode horseback in Palestine and saw much of the landscape such as Nazareth, the Valley of Jordan, and the Dead Sea. His horse was one of the fastest in the group, and he and Mr. Atterby ran their horses one morning. One night, their tent collapsed but was soon repaired by their guide, Ibrahim. Henry wishes the late Frank could hear about his travels.

Jerusalem April 12th 1876
My dear Bro Edward
Our very pleasant visit
in Jerusalem has come to a close
and now I feel like writing to the
dear ones at home. We leave for
Jaffa to-morrow morning but certainly
shall never forget what our eyes have

seen in Palestine. We have taken, I pre-
sume one of the longest horseback rides
we shall ever take - probably 240 miles
at least. And I am sure we shall
never take a more interesting one. I
forgot in large measure for these two
weeks all the world outside of Palestine.
The country is hilly and rocky like
New Hampshire. One is impressed by
the smallness of it when you can stand
in some places as we did on the hill
back of Nasareth and see the the
Mediterranean sea on one side and
the sea of Galilee on the other. The

valley of the Jordan and the Dead sea
are also in distinct view from the
mount of Olives and people say that
the Mediterranean can also be seen from
the minaret there. I was at the top
of this minaret are morning at sunrise
but could not see the Mediterranean. I
presume it was an account of the weather
being a little hazy.
In travelling our horses
usually walked. I had an old
white fellow. If I gave him to un-
derstand what I wanted he would
go like the wind like a race horse
He seemed to utterly despise anything
like a slow canter. I had some
long runs on the fellow's back. He was
I think the best runner in the party.
He never wanted to let anything get
ahead of him when he was running.
I had some runs with Mr Atterbury
along the sands one cool morning,
when I think we must have looked
about like people riding race horses.
The horses seemed to enjoy it, and we
did too. We were so fortunate as to
have pleasant weather during the whole
trip with the exception of the last day

when it rained making our last
night in the tents rather wet. One
night before at the sea of Galilee
our ten pole broke in the night
giving us rather a flat roof for a
rainy night but as it was lowest in
the middle the leakage all came there
and our little iron bedsteads around the
sides of the tent kept perfectly dry. In
the morning our dragoman "Abraham"
or "Ibrahim" (as he spells it) got a man
to come and splice the pole and
set things to rights. I must reserve
what we saw and heard to tell you
when I get home. I can't help thinking
how interested Frank would have been
in hearing about it too but he is better
off in the [u]New[/u] Jerusalem. Among
other places we went into a large
quarry under the city which we
entered from a little door just outside
the wall. It is said that the stones
for Solomon's temple came out of this
great quarry which does not seem at
all improbable
Although I begun this letter
at Jerusalem I did not finish it there but I
presume that makes no great difference to you.
I shall hope to see you not many days after this
