Chefoo Sept 22d 1874
My dear household
I have not time
this morning to answer
separately your good letters
and so will write to you
together. I reached this
place on my return from
Peking last night and
on coming up from the
steamer to Dr Nevins'
found Dr + Mrs Ellinwood.
I have therefore accepted
a very cordial invitation
from Mrs Nevins to re-
main over one steamer
and thus will have the
opportunity of a good
visit. Dr + Mrs Ellinwood
are both very pleasant
He has black hair black
Eyes and looks smart.
Dr Nevins expects to go
with him to Peking. He
intended to try to get
back to Shanghai by
the 20th of next month
and to Canton by the
middle of November.
I met Prof Young
on the way down the
river from Peking. We
saw a fleet of boats
on one of which was
the American flag. We
knew the Astronomical
deputation was expected
and supposed this was
it. Accordingly we
hauled up our boat
to the shore and waited
for them. I was standing
on our boat keeping a
sharp lookout. On their
3d boat there was a
man standing outside. He
looked in the distance
quite old an[--y--]d gray and
I said "that is not Prof
Young" but as the boat
came nearer I saw that
it [--m--] was notwithstanding
He recognised me and
as the boats came along
they did not come quite
near enough to step from
one to the other and so
we each kind of run
along the side of the boat
to get across and finally
I made a jump to his boat
and he got hold of me
with both hands and we
shook each other very cor-
dially. We stopped about
ten minutes + then went on.
He hardly expects to get to
Canton but it not quite cer-
tain. I got Hattie's short note
at Tientsin and it was very
welcome. I will try to get
home for the Social in Nov but
probably very little before that. The
others are waiting for me and I must
close
Very much love Your Aff Bro
