My dear Edward -
The last letter
came on Monday. First
about 11 A.M. a lot of papers
for the Kuk Fan people
then there was a scurrying about
to see what had become of the
letters. After awhile they appeared
but after reading them I felt
mentally the sensation one does
physically when hunger is only
partially satisfied. It is now
about the time when old Winter
has to give way to Spring and
at home we greet the new
comer rather more warmly
then we do here. Am glad
Henry got away when he did
escaped a lot of rainy weather
Indeed it seems as if it had

just made up its mind to rain.
Dr McFarlands son came
very unexpected yesterday Mon
Is up on a health trip. Is
just Jones age 23 graduated
from Cannonsburg three years
ago and is now assisting his
father in the Bangkkok
school. It is under govern
ment [?fund?] is superintended
by the Siamese. They can
not reach religion at all
even indirectly. Can not
teach Christianity. It would
seem very hard to be so
situated among a heathen
people. But Dr McFarland
is really a supt. {general} of the
[?Educaturred?] interests of Siam
in a way and it does seem as
if a Christian man - a foreign
missionary could do a great
deal in influencing his
pupils. And it does not seem

as if it would be right to have
an unbeliever or an infidel
in such a position. I am glad
however we are not called to go
into such work. The Dr is just
now busy drafting I meant
draughting the plan for an
Asylum for the Insane to be
located in Canton or vicinity
The idea is if possible to get
the funds out of the Chinese in
some way but do not know if
it can be done. There is nothing
done for this afflicted class
any where in the empire.
The Dr sent a copy of the last
Medical Missionary Journal to
Dr Bigham - that is he sent an
order from Shanghai to have
one sent. We hope the Dr
will take it. It has quite a
good deal of Missionary
news in it. No doubt he will
let you see it. The Dr has a

short article in it. At this moment
the said Dr is drawing a sketch
of [--an--] a medical instrument which
is to be an improvement upon
one already made in New York
and he is sending this pattern
on to New York to have one
made like it. I believe some
of his improvements are already
doing duty in the hands of
some of those "distinguished
physicians" who no doubt are not
aware of it. If we ever go home
we will probably visit some of
those hospitals. It will not
be surprizing if we live if you
should see us at the old farm
before the end of many years.
I do think the Dr does as
much in one year as main would
in a much longer time. His
published books he sends off in
large quantities - and his Medical
fees amount to considerable al
so. He has been on the ground

[Note: Letter continues sideways on page one]
[--34 years--] Almost 35 years with a vacation all told of 4 years and
4 month and the Board has paid his expenses to go home 3 times
The profits of his
medical books
goes to the
Medical society
An old carpenter
is now talking to
him. A man
has been in to
get advice about
a poor woman
who has dropsy
but it is a hopeless
case. The Dr took
me to see her
the other day.
It is so sad
to witness so
much distress

[Note: Letter continues sideways on page two]
I hope you with have a nice visit with Henry. He will
spend the Sabbath with you.

是真正的警司{general}
