Title

Letter from Mattie to Edward, December 20, 1879

Subject

Christian education of girls; Letter writing; Women missionaries; Women physicians

Description

In this letter to her brother Frank, Mattie writes about the recent company they've had. Dr. Sara A. is supposed to leave the mission soon and everyone is happy to see her go. Mattie also recounts how a "Chinaman" entered the school, shocking everyone, and made an appeal for them to take his niece. She was too young but her family wanted her to be raised by Christians.

My dear Edward
For once I have
put the letters received by
the last mail on my writing
desk and mean if possible
to answer them before the
next mail leaves which will
be on Tuesday. We are very
glad to hear from our dear
brother notwithstanding
his protestations of always
writing nothing but non
sense. As for me I wish I
could do something in that
line {writing letters I mean}
but really we do not get any
thing accomplished scarcely
It is 9 weeks since I
came home and we have

not been a day without compa
ny, nor shall we be much
before the end of the year. It
does take so much time and
strength When people come
it brings all our community
to call on them then there is
the going out with them sight
seeing and to evening compa
nies which comes into the
programme and can not
be avoided. Miss Dr Frask
from Fuchau came up in
the Steamer to day and we
are to meet her at Henry's to
night, do not know how
long she expects to be a guest
there. It seems she is an ac
quantice of Mrs Sara A.
but from all we hear a totally
different person has done
a good noble work in Fuchau
and expects to take her vacation

a year from now in Germany
so that she can study her pro
fession more thoroughly. I
have heard a great deal about
her and am exceedingly glad to
have an opportunity of seeing
her. Dr S. A. is expecting to leave
this side of the world about the
1st of Jan, and we are properly
thankful. She has made her own
impression upon everybody
here and it is only true to say
it is not a favorable one. We
will all be very glad when this
outlay of funds is stopped.
Henry thinks she is to be mar-
ried in England but it is of
course only surmise. Dr & Mrs
Graves are with us until after
Christmas when their new
house will be ready for them
They fear they will be obliged
to give up their trip to Palestine

because of the non arrival of his
helper Mr Simmons. I am so
sorry. To day a Chinaman came
here with a little niece whom he
wanted to be taken into school
Hattie was gone and I out hear
ing classes in the B.S. when
dear little Hattie Kerr came to the
door with the news "there was a
Chinaman in the parlor who wan-
ted to come out into the school
with her and if she liked the es-
tablishment wanted to come
into the school. Well a China man
would make a commotion among
the girls. No such being ever entered
those doors. Well says I to myself
a funny individual you must
be to think you can put your
bald head into our dominions
and I forthwith betook myself
into the house. The creature had
been in San Francisco for five
years which accounted for his
good English had been in Dr
Loomis' school said he hoped
he was a Christian

[Continued vertically on the first page]
The child was as pretty as a picture but only 7 years old
so we could not take her. He said his sister wanted
her children
brought up under
Christian ladies
He seemed very
nice indeed,
and they were
willing to pay
the child's expenses
Well good night
not much here
is there. I can tell
you what you
do not know that
we are having very
fine weather, no
need of fires yet.
Must write to
[Illegible]
Mattie

[Written vertically on the fourth page]
Dear Edward I hope I may sometime have the privilege of
hearing you lead a prayer meeting
