Description
Henry writes to Edward onboard the "Spark" between Canton and Macao on his birthday. He writes that the summer is about over although there is still some nice weather. Henry tells Edward that he will sing his music to the best of his ability. He does not think he would be able to teach white people music very well but he thinks he can teach the Chinese.

Canton Sept 30th 1869
My dear Bro Edward-
On Board " Spark " between
Canton & Macao
My dear Bro Oct 18th 1869
I wrote the above on your birth
day but did'nt get far enough [?sure?] to give
you my good wishes. I do it now in a
trembling sort of a way as you will readily
see the steamer shakes so that I can't make
the letters straight but perhaps you can read
them Hattie sent one envelope full off this
morning by the HongKong steamer but a steamer
goes from Macao at 8-o-clock to-morrow
morning which will reach Hong Kong before the
"Japan" leaves at three-o-clock. PM. We had
not made any calculations to leave Canton at
all this year but Mrs Preston was quite anxious
we should go down for a visit while she was
there and so we are going to take a vacation
of two weeks. We shall have a real nice time
I am sure. Our long summer is about over
although I suppose it would still be considered
pretty good summer weather at home. Thermometer
about 85° in the middle of the day. The nights are
comfortable but we don't need much covering yet.
I suppose you are through with your music at
Ashland & have got quite a book of music
made. I hope you will let us have the benefit
of your tunes. We will sing them to the best of our
ability. I think those charts that are spoken of
in a paper you sent us, and which you said
you were going to get must be very nice for
teaching music. I do'nt know but I shall be sending
for some after awhile, as I belong to the profession ."
Yes sir I am a regular music [--teacher--] teacher.
"I do'nt suppose I would do very well for white
people but think [?mebbe?] I'll do for these Chinese".
I play the melodeon at prayers in the hospital
chapel every morning and sometimes when they
[?flat?] very bad as they often do I know it .
So much for music and now while I think of
it I will tell you about a chinamen I saw a few
days ago who had a grain of rice on one side of
which were written 85 Chinese characters. They were
so small that I could'nt distinguish them without a mag-
nifying glass but they had been written by a [?Chineseman?] with
his hair pencil. Hattie saw last saturday a little covered
boat about 3/4 of an inch long and half an inch wide on
the under side of which were carved 600 characters.
Mr Vrooman is doing quite a trade in sewing machines
The Chinese are beginning to think that they rather beat
their needles. He has sold between 20 & 30 I believe & the
other day I saw a plough & cultivator which he had [--m--] got for
a [?duianeau?]. Well my paper is done & so I will stop.
