Title

Letter from Henry to Clara, May 22, 1882

Subject

Industrialization--China; Industrialization; United States--Relations--China; Anniversaries; Book-worms

Description

Henry writes to Clara wishing her a happy birthday and celebrating his 16-year anniversary of being in China. He writes about the industrial and cultural changes that have taken place recently due to Western influence. Henry thinks the recent law pausing Chinese emigration will mean there will be more people moving to the US in the near future before it is enacted. He says that he has spent the day poisoning books so that bookworms will not destroy more of them.

Canton May 22d 1882
Dear Clara
Yesterday (Sunday) was
your birth day but allowing
for the difference in time the
22d on this side is about
near the true time as the
21st so I think I am not
too late to send you my
best wishes and wish[--es--]
you many happy returns
of the day. May 22d is the
day I reached Hong Kong in
1866 so it came very near
being on your birth day. To-
morrow will make just 16 years
since I arrived in the
city of Canton. A good many
changes have taken place since
that time. The Chinese though
people think they move slowly have

also changed a good deal
I remember when I first came
trying to get a Kerosene lamp
and could not find one
any where in Canton city.
Now [--its--] a great many of
the Chinese use them, and
they are sold not only every-
where through the city but at
all the principal towns for a
long distance in the interior.
You can find condensed
milk for sale at someplaces
200 miles inland. American
clocks are sold in great
numbers and all sorts
of small foreign articles are
making their appearance
more and more. The[--y--] Chinese
now [--mang--] manage their revenue
cruisers themselves and have
a great many steam launches

on the rivers as guard boats.
They are introducing the telegraph
and railroads will come
along in due time. I should
think it would be a matter
of commercial advantage for
the United States to keep on
good terms with China. We
have just heard by telegram
of the passage of the law sus-
pending Chinese Emigration +
its signature by the President.
We must wait for the mail
to get the details of the bill.
I hardly thought they would
get it through but it seems
they have. I expect there will
be a rush of Chinese going
to the United States for the
next one or two trips and then
all will stop. I presume it will

make some difference about
the frequency of our mail as
the steamers have been taking
so many Chinese passengers.
I suppose cutting them off will
have the effect of making the
steamers less frequent.
I have been poisoning
books to-day. At home book-
worms are considered rather
deserving of praise than other -
wise. -- out here we poison
them . They are so small you
can hardly see them but they
make bad work with books. I
have been going over the books
and putting a preparation of
corrosive sublimate along the
Ends and inside the covers and
elsewhere wherever the worms seem
to have been Eating.
Bella and the children are well
and send their love with mine
Your Aff Bro
