Description

Henry writes to Mattie reporting that a Russel & Co. steamer is bringing mail from Hong Kong to San Francisco. He hopes she will be removed from New York soon so that she will feel better. The mail will arrive aboard the "Gaelic" today and Mrs. Whilden will leave on it. Henry is going to San-Ui soon and would bring Bella and the children. Henry is sending a translation of "Matthew" to Shanghai and has made progress on Luke and John. He and Dr. Happer and Mr. Henry are translating "Romans" through "Revelation" and Henry's teacher has gotten further on "Genesis".

Text

Canton March 20th 1882
Dear Mattie,
I heard yesterday
that a private steamer sent
by Russell [?& Co?] would take
a mail from HongKong for
San Francisco to-morrow and
so will write a few lines.
Mother wrote me by the
last mail and told me
you were having quite a
tedious time in New York.
I hope that long before this
reaches you, you will be
at home again and feeling
well after all you have been
suffering. We are expecting the
mail from San Francisco by
the Gaelic this afternoon. It
may be here within an hour

Miss Whilden expects to take
passage for home in her.
I saw Miss W. this morning
She said she hardly expected
to be in the Northern part of
the country so I suppose
there is not much hope
of your seeing her.
I am expecting to leave
for a country trip to San-Ui
and the other stations to-
morrow morning. Bella and
the children had been thinking
of going with me, but a Bible
woman who had promised to
go went to Hong Kong and
has not returned so that
Bella has concluded to remain
at home especially as she has
plenty to do. Mr White and
Mr Fulton are also expecting
to start in the morning for

Lin-Chau and on Thursday
morning Mr Henry is ex-
pecting to start for Chuk Liu
so there will be quite a thinning
out of our mission. Mr White
does not expect to stay very
long at Lin-Chau but Mr
Fulton thinks of remaining
for two or three months.
I should not wonder
if we would all have
some rainy weather. So far
there has been very little
rain this year and it
seems as if it must come
pretty soon. To day is stormy
and a half an hour ago
it got so dark that it was
about as much as I could
do to see to read. I have

just finished preparing a
copy of Matthew to send to
Shanghai. I rather think
you knew that Mr Piercy
and I have been at work
upon a revision for
some time. We have also
finished Mark and made
some progress with Luke &
John. I hope we shall
get the whole New Testament
through in time. Dr Happer
Mr Henry and I are at
work on the last part from
Romans to Revelation My
teacher has [--made a--] put more
of Genesis into colloquial
I hope in time to get the
Pentateuch all done. Now I wonder how
this letter will find you. I do
hope very much better. Bella wishes
me to send her love. The children are
very well. Your aff Bro,
Henry.
