Letter from Henry to Clara, February 3, 1882

Death; Chinese--Missions; Baptism

Henry writes to his sister Clara with condolences for Aunt Fay's passing, especially since both she and Mattie lived with her for a period. The children Willie and Richard Varnum are well. Henry says that the mission has been met with some opposition recently and people have been hesitant to apply for baptism.

Dear Clara
The last mail brought
a letter from Mother in
which she speaks particularly
of the death of dear Aunt Fay
We heard it by the mail
before but had no partic-
lars. I was glad to see
Cousin Mary's letter giving
all the particulars. I am
so glad that I saw her
while at home. She seemed
so comfortable and happy. I
think of it now with much
satisfaction. I shall never
forget her conscientious
faithfulness in doing whatever
she regarded as duty. You
know she was at our house
considerable when I was quite

a small boy. But of course
you and Mattie knew her best
as you both lived with her
in her own home. It would
have been a satisfaction if
Mattie could have reached
Hartford in time to have seen
her --- We are all well now
excepting colds which of course
come now and then . Both
of the children are growing
finely and little Richard
Varnum is beginning to
walk around the room quite
lively. He is lighter and
quicker in all his motions
than Willie was. He does not
talk much but says a few
words. The weather here hase
been warm most of the winter
but has turned colder now

We are glad of it for it
[?walls?] up the system more
It is communion at my
church at Sz-Pai-Lan next
Sabbath. I had expected there
would be some applicants for
baptism but none appeared to-
day so that I presume there
will not be any. There has
been some opposition during
the last month. The meetings
had been much more than
usually interesting and there
were a number of inquirers,
some eight or ten. This was
no doubt the reason why some
body stirred up the people to
make trouble. They made a
good deal of disturbance for
several days and the result
was that those who had been
inquiring did not venture to

to come to the chapel any more
that is most of them. One who
had thought of applying for
baptism says he thinks he had
better wait awhile. Most of the
members of this church are
bannermen that is they belong
to the military force and I
suppose if their higher officers
are disposed to do so they
come make it very unpleas-
ant for them if they become
christians-- No special news
farther. Miss Hattie McDonald
from Bangkok has been
Canton ill for two months. Her
mother has come now to be with
her. She seems now to be im-
proving but I think she will
probably go home to the United
States when she gets well enough. She
was sick a long while in BangKok
before coming here. Now I will say
good bye for this time
