Description
In this letter to his mother, Henry wishes her a happy birthday and reflects on her old age. They are waiting for news about Mattie's travels and the shooting of President Garfield. The warm weather in China affects them all, but Henry's family is planning for a trip up the West River soon. Churches there have had some interest.

My dear Mother
I have not at all
forgotten that this is your birth
day and now I have come
to my desk to write a few lines
for fear I may not have so
much time after the mail
comes. We expect the American
mail in the course of an hour
or so and if not disappointed
will hear from home on your
birth day. I hope you are
well and that this year will
be a very happy one for you.
I can hardly realize that you
are now more than 70 years
old. I presume you will have
all the children in the USA
at home on the hill to day. We
hope to hear of Mattie's safe
arrival too by the mail. It
is now overdue one day so
that unless there it some ac-
cident we feel quite sure of
it. We have only had a few
telegrams in reference to the
shooting of Pres Garfield. I
expect in the San Francisco
Bulletin we shall get an
account of the whole matter.
We have been having some
quite hot weather of late. It
does not affect me much
but BElla feels it considerably
and the baby also as he is
cutting teeth. His eigthth tooth
will be through soon and
then I hope he will have
a little rest, Will is usually
well but is redered more or
lEss uncomfortable by
prickly hear which most all
children have here in the
summer. I have it considerable
Another month or a little more
will take us over the greatest
heat of summer. We expect
to leave for San-Ui the
22d of September and after
visiting the regular stations
make a month's trip up
the West River. I have
never been but about 80
miles up the river, expect
this fall to go perhaps 200
miles and also go up
some of its branches.
Last Sabbath was communion
at Sz-Pai-Lan. There were
none admitted to the church
There was one applicant who
seems to be quite in Earnest
but he has been an opium
eater for 30 years and has
not yet given it up. So he
was advised to break off from
that before we could receive
him. . He is about 70 years
old and it is said to
be a very difficult matter
for a man of that age to
give it up. There were
five children baptized. [?There?]
wEre children of a man who
joined at the last communion
and who seems to be a
most earnest christian man.
To-day is Saturday but the
mail does not go from here
until next Tuesday so I will
write to some of the home circle
after the receipt of the American mail
With love + best wishes from us all
