Canton July 29th 1881
Dear Bro Edward
I wrote to Father on his
birthday but will give notes to a little
later date this morning. At the time
I wrote to him I was at San-Ui.
I went on from there and visited the
other stations. There were no others received
into the church at either of the other sta-
tions. I was away just 3 weeks. I
thought when I left that I would have
a very hot time, but after the first three
or four days it rained and was comfortable
weather all [--the--] the time. One day I passed
a great strong Chinaman under the shade
of a bamboo who seemed prostrated by the
heat. It rained so much that in
some places it covered the roads or paths
they might be more appropriately called.
I walked to Chung-Lau station which is
12 miles from the river through a pouring

rain all the way and had much the
same experience coming back the next
day. When I had gone 3 or 4 miles my
feet slipped suddenly and as I was on a
little narrow path between the rice field and
the road I had not much chance to choose
as to how I would fall. To the muddy rice
field was about 3 feet, to the level of the
road on the other sied 6 inches. My feet
both went towards the rice field and I
naturally sat down on the [--to--] narrow path,
only an instant however for the preponderance
of weight was toward the road and so
my feet suddenly went up and I came
flat on the "broad of my back" in the yellow
mud and two inches of water in the road
My coat was then yellow in color. It was
brown linen and I pulled it off washed it
in a stream running hard by put it on again
and pursued my journey. Coming back I
had some of the way to wade nearly up to my
knees in water. When I got back to San
Ui I got the news of General Garfield having been
shot. I hope he will recover. I have not much
faith in the Vice President. The baby is just now
having rather a hard time with his teeth. Willie is very well
[Written vertically on the second page]
He asked me the other day if my "older brother" talked Chinese Bella has not
been very well for the last day or two. I am in excellent health Love to all from us all
Your aff Bro Henry
