Canton Aug 6th 1882
My dear Mother
To day is a
quiet but quite hot
Sunday. I have not
forgotten that it is your
birth-day. I am just
through my Chinese
work for the day and
am going to just begin
a letter to send you
my good, best wishes.
It is so happens that it
is my turn to preach
at the missionary meeting
this evening. My text is
"Tarry in Jerusalem until

ye be Endued with power
from on high." Now I
will drop my pen for
to-day and finish to-
morrow which will in
reality be as near the
actual time of your
birth day as to day. I
hope you will have a
pleasant and useful
year. I would be very
glad indeed if I could
see you this quiet
Sabbath afternoon.
Aug 11th Here is it 5 days after
writing and the above and I will fin-
ish my letter as it must go
down to Hong Kong this afternoon.

This reminds me that we are
all expecting to go down to Hong Kong
about 3 weeks from now to stay
three weeks. The Pastor of Union
Church Mr Colville has gone
to Japan for nine weeks and
has arranged to have Mr Masters
Mr Henry and I fill his pul-
pit while he is away. This
gives us three weeks each. Mr
Masters has been there three
weeks and comes back to-day.
Mr Henry + family went down last night
and we go in three weeks. Mr
Colville has provided a furnished
house so that we can all
take our families for a little
[?charge?]. As soon as we
come back we will start
for the country stations. Ex-
pect to be gone in all some
six weeks spending a
month at San-Ui. After

we get back I expect we shall
go up the West River with
the Simmons for a trip + that
will take us to near the End
of the year. We have just
heard from the Board about
the Estimates for next year.
They are not able to furnish
funds for a chapel at Sz-Pai-Lan
and so we must wait
awhile longer. During the month
of July [--at--] 6 new members
were received to the church
at Sz-Pai Lan and four
at the country stations that I
have charge making ten in
all during the month.
The hot weather is over
for this time and this morning
it is nice and cold with a
dElightful breeze. ---
An American Mail came
yesterday morning by an irregular str. I
got papers but not letters .The regular
[Note: Continues sideways]
mail is expected next Wednesday. Bella sends love and
the children would like to [?send?] some as well as
