Canton May 17th 1882
Dear Ones at Home
It is May 17th and
between 9 and 10-o-clock AM
just about the time that
six years ago we were
drawing near home. My
thoughts have been wandering
away over the intervening
six years to that morning
and that day - and then
to that next May 17th when
we wrote our names on
the tree in the woods.
What a perfect day was
that of the home coming?
and the other one too.
I feel glad even yet as I
think of it that it rained
so that Sarah did not feel
obliged to start back to Columbus
It hardly seems as though
six years had passed away
since then. I hope you
are all having as pleasant
a day as the same day
in 1876.--- Yesterday two of
our Missionaries left for England
one of them Mr Selby has
been out here nearly as long
as I have. The other Mr Marris
has been out a little
more than two years. He
had typhoid fever and
it left him with some liver
trouble. His liver is enlarging
and the doctors advise him
to go home at once. Both
of these missionaries belong to
the English Wesleyan Mission -
Since commencing this
I have been doing considerable
of my day's work. It is now
5-o-clock PM. This forenoon
I was looking over some
sermons written by out na-
tive preachers, and having a
talk with a young man from
California who wishes to preach
here for a time. The Mission
examined him yesterday and
he was received as a native
assistant and is to be under
my care. He comes from Napa
Cal and the minister of the
Pres ch there used to preach in
Cleveland and knows father. I
will quote the beginning of his letter
"My dear Bro Years ago when I had
charge of the Presby ch. of Cleveland Ohio
it was my pleasure + privilege to
know your father as an honored
member of the Presby. It is now my
privilege to write to you in reference
to the Mission work he so loved and also
thereby taught his brethren to love" He
then writes in reference to this
Chinese preacher who had been
working among the Chinese in Napa
for about 4 months ---
After dinner I went in with
this young man to the chapel, then
came back and heard the boys
in the day school recite, and now
am going over to Dr Happers.
May 18th I will finish out this,
this morning just as May 17th
is drawing to a close with you.
Last evening was our Mission
prayer meeting which was
held at Mr White's. We had a
good meeting and after meeting
the two Happer girls and ourselves
remained a little while and
sang as Mr White is a great
lover of music. It has been
very hot the past few days and
we all feel it some. Good
bye for this time with the wish
that you all may be blessed till
May 17th 1883 + ever after
