Description

Henry wishes his sister Sarah a happy birthday which reminds him of when Gilbert left. Henry continues this letter on the 10th and tells Sarah that Richard Varnum is not well because he is teething. The Whites are expected to go to Lin Chau this year but they have not been able to rent a house so far because the highest official of the place is against foreigners renting houses. A large number of missionaries will be sent out, yet they do not expect any in Canton, just like last year. He concludes with the news that Dr. Kerr's brother died.

Canton June 2d 1882
Dear Sarah
I wrote a birth-day letter
to Mattie yesterday and now your
turn comes to day. I wish you
a happy day and year and many
returns. The birth days would come
along very frequently if all the fami-
ly were still living. Franks on the
31st of May, Matties on the 1st of June
yours on the 2d, and Gilberts on
the 4th. Willie is now I suppose
something [--the--] near the age Gilbert
was when he left home. I remem-
ber almost as well as though it
were yesterday the morning that
he went away. He sat down before
the fire (we had a fire place then) with
his little cap on, without much
realization I suppose that he was
going to leave us. I remember
how we watched the buggy that
he rode away in, as far as we
could see it from the study window

We saw it as it went way along
above Mr Eastons and then lost
sight of it. I wish so much that
we had a photograph of the dear
little boy.
June 10th I had written to this point
the other day when something in
terrupted and I did not finish
and now it is the morning for
the mail to go. I suppose it is
almost time for your long summer
vacation to begin which I suppose
always makes you feel glad.
Summer here has fairly set in and
now we are having steady hot
weather which I suppose will con-
tinue for the next few months.
We are all pretty well except Richard
Varnum who is getting some
large double teeth and so is not
as well as usual. They will be
through before very long now I
presume and then he will feel
better no doubt. He generally is
very bright when he is feeling
well. Bella tried to get a picture

taken of him awhile but could
not get him to keep still long
enough. This reminds me of a
picture I saw a day or two
ago. It was a picture of going
to bed or evening and another
picture of morning . The evening
picture consisted of twenty or
thirty babies every one crying
as hard as they could with mouths
wide open, a most doleful looking
company the photographer had got
them one at a time whenever
he could by the instantaneous
process and then put them
all together in a group. In the
companion picture then were
just as many more babies
but all smiling and happy.
The photographer had grouped a
lot of happy looking faces together
in the same way that he did
the other. It was really quite
an interesting picture. I do not
know of anything particular that
has occurred to vary the even tenor

of our way here unless it be
the Missionary Conference which
was held at Mr White's last
Wednesday evening and was quite
well attended. The White's did ex-
pect to go to Lin Chau this
year but as they have not suc-
ceeded in renting a house will
not go, I suppose, at present. The
highest official of the place is not
in favor of a place being rented
to foreigners and so [--I set--] it
proves a difficult matter. I
see by the paper that there
are a large number of mission-
aries to be sent out this
year. As we fared so well
last year I expect we shall
not get any this year.
Dr Kerr has just heard of the
death of his brother. Possibly you
may have heard of it. He was an
only brother. I did not know until
a few days ago that they were left
orphans when young. They have both
proved to be good men. Now I must
close much love from Bella & the children
as much as myself Your Aff Bro, Henry.

Gilberts

Varnum
