San-Ui
March 29th /83
Dear Clara --
We are here in
San-Ui again in the little
house built last year. We
make ourselves very comfortable
in the two little rooms and
enjoy it here . We hoped to
have received the American
Mail before this time. Yester-
day, a package appeared from
Canton and we supposed,
of course it contained the
home mail but on opening
it found only local letters
and some newspapers.
The newspapers (the China
mail) gave us the in-
formation that the American

mail is not expected in
Hongkong until to-morrow
so that we shall have to
wait some days for it yet.
We left Canton March 14th
and went first to ChikHom
reaching that place Saturday
afternoon . The members of
the church were nearly
all there for the communion
service on the Sabbath. One
man was received on
profession. He was from
near the village of Fu-Lo-Kong,
where a number who have
joined the church come from,
who have a meeting together
every Sabbath. With Mr
Jones' help, the salary for

three months was paid and
the expenses of the station up`
to June 1st. After the Sab-
bath, I went on to Chung-
Lau and Kwong Hoi. Bella
(and the children) remained
at Chik Hom until I came
back doing work among
the women. -- At Chung
Lau there were no additions
to the church. Five were
present at the communion,
which was more than
usual. They were not
however all Presbyterians.
At Kwong Hoi there was
one applicant for baptism
who was received. Including
him there were four present

at the communion service
Kwong Hoi is about 16 miles
from Chung Lau and on
the sea shore. It is a
broken down kind of city as
it was entirely destroyed
some 20 years ago by the
Hakkas who it is said
put to death some 20000
people. The city does not
number over half that, I should
think. What there is, has been
built since the destruction
of the city. They say some
new buildings are going up
every year and that in time
it will probably be as large
as formerly. I got back to
Chung-Lau on Wednesday
Evening. My paper is done + I will
stop. Love from Bella + the children
as well as from Your Aff Bro -Henry -
