Description
Henry writes to his mother for his birthday, which is a habit he attributes to his father. He gives updates on the rainy weather in San-Ui and their plans to leave soon. Henry tells his mother about Willie, who wanted to take communion with the adults last Sabbath. He showed his little brother how to take communion but said he had to wait to be baptized.

San-Ui April 24th 1883
My Dear Mother
I have just finished
a letter to Father on this
my birth-day and now will
write to you. I remember that
[--is--] was Father's custom, and
[--I--] a very good one too, to
write to his Mother on each
returning birth day while she
lived. The last letter from
home was from Edward. He
was then expecting a musical
Convention to be held soon
at Seville. I was sorry to
know that he still needed
to use his crutches . I
mentioned in my letter to
Father that it had rained
while we have been here , but
do not think I mentioned
how persistently it has rained
very rarely has there been a
day during the month that
it has not rained, so that
we have had great difficulty
in getting anything dry -
When it is wEt weather here
in the Spring every thing gets
mouldy. My shoes in two
or three days will get all
white with mould. To day
however the clothing which
Amah has washed is
hanging on bamboo's out
in the yard, and the
[--blo--] blankets and bed clothing
are in the [?benches?] to
catch the bright sunshine
It may rain yet before
night as it most always
does even if we have some
sunshine. To morrow
morning we shall be packing
up to go home. -----
I must tell you
how Willie and baby took
the Communion last Sabbath.
Willie sat beside his mother
and when the bread was
passed around he reached
out his hand to take it
but of course she stopped
him -- After meeting we
brought the plate of bread +
the nine from the chapel
into the house. He is getting
so that he helps considerable
in little things of that kind.
He brought in the head +
wine and put them on the
table. Bella was in the
back room but could see him
After putting the bread on the
table he took one of the little
pieces and put it into his
mount and then put his hand
over his eyes a minute or
two as he had seen other people
do. Then he took another piece
and gave it to his "little brother"
as he calls him constantly in
Chinese. Then he took another
piece himself and put his hand
up over his eyes again. Bella
afterward explained to him that
when he got larger if he really
believed and loved Jesus he
could commune. -- She after-
wards heard him telling Richard
that he would have to be baptized
before he could drink the wine.
and he said in English that
Sai-Lo (little brother) wanted his sins
[--washEd--] washed too. Now I must close
much love from us all to you
all Your Aff Son
