Henry writes to Edward to ask him about his pain, hoping he is recovering. Henry has been traveling up the West River. They were not welcome in Kwang-Si; their boats were stormed but managed to get away with minimal damage. When they got their boats away from the shore, brickbats were thrown at them. Overall, Henry says they came back refreshed from the trip. Henry thinks that Willie and Richard have whooping cough.

Dear Edward
I got your letter dated
Oct 21st at Shui Hing 80 miles up the
West River from Canton. Bella & the chil-
dren and myself with Mr Simmons and
his wife were on our return from quite
a long trip up into the Kwang Si province.
Your letter began by saying that you
were "still in your box." For some reason
the previous mail had not reached us
and I had not heard of the accident
that had happend to you. Your letter and
Clara's told me that you were getting along
well and would be released so as to
move about a little on the following Monday.
After reaching Canton I got the other letters
which told me all about how you
had been hurt. I was so sorry to
hear of it. It seems so strange that
you did not know it at first. I suppose
it gave such a shock to the nervous
system as to make it [--went--] without
feeling for the time. I am sure you
must have felt it enough afterward
It must have been very tedious indeed
to keep still so long. I had to keep
tolerably quiet the time I had spinal
trouble and while I could not turn
over I could move about some. It
was not like having to keep perfectly
still in the same position. And then
one of the letters says that you had
to have the limb kept stretched so
that it should not shorten which
must have been tiresome to the muscles
I hope the pain and tiresomeness is
all over now and you are going
around again. I always had a
dread of those [?thills?] that are attached
to the carriage with [u] bolts [/u] for fear the
nuts might come off. I believe however
[?thills?] are generally put in that way.
We never know how soon we may
be in danger. The important thing
is to be prepared for whatever God
sees best to send.
We had a pleasant very
pleasant trip up the West River and
on the whole a satisfactory one in
regard to work although in the Kwang-
Si province it was quite evident that
the gentry would much prefer to have
us elsewhere. At Ny-Chau [--they--] the
first large city that we came to in
the Kwang-Si province they managed to
give our boats quite a lively storming and
that too just when the district mag-
istrate came on board. We came
off however with no damage to any-
thing except a few broken boards on
the side and end of the boat. We
managed in a few minutes to get
the boat away from the shore, but
the brick-bats flew lively for a little
while. We afterwards learned that the
gentry had paid each person who
would throw stones 50 cash. The
whole thing was evidently originated
and put in motion by the gentry. It
was not so much on account of our
visit as some trouble about a chapel
which the Baptists had opened there
near the beginning of the year and
which had recently been partly torn down
and everything inside destroyed. Mr
Simmons had been having [--somewhat--]
some communication with the magistrate
in reference to having the chapel
restored and indemnity paid for
the destruction of property and this was
quite displeasing to the gentry. We went
on 50 miles into the Kwang So province
and found no farther trouble. At one
district city however the district
magistrate came on board with great
professions of friendship, with two chickens,
two ducks and a ham for each
boat and entreated us not to land as
[--the--] it was [--them--] the time for military con-
tests and there were 5000 people there
more than usual and he feared we
might be stoned &c &C. In deference
to his request we passed his city
by but hope to go there again sometime
He said any other time we could land
and sell books. He tried to make us
believe there was trouble in the country
above and thought we had better go back
We did not believe him and so went
on and found no trouble whatever.
We all came back refreshed
by the trip. Willie and Richard had quite
a bad cough the last few days which
we suspect is whooping cough.
Now we are just coming into San-
Ui, and I must say good bye for this
time. I was only a day in Canton after coming
back form the West River. Mr Fulton is
making this trip with me Bella and the children
having remained in Canton.

Dear Edward
I got your letter dated
Oct 21st at Shui Hing 80 miles up the

Your letter began by saying that you
