Letter from Henry to Mary, February 6, 1883

Missionaries; New church members; Church development, New; Cost

Henry writes to Mary about a report that's being written on the Mission work. He thinks that this will the best report ever written. There have been many additions to the church and Henry expects the contributions will be even larger. Henry thinks that there are over one hundred new members. They haven't gotten the money for the new church in Sz-Pai-Lan yet but they have gone ahead with the new building at the hospital.

Canton Feb 6th 1883
Dear Mary
I have just finished
a few lines to Clara and
will write a little more
to you. I have this fore-
noon been making out a
report of the Mission work
under my care and
perhaps will send a copy
home when I get it finished
Mr Fulton is to write the
regular Mission Report this
year and this that
I am making is for his
use. I think we shall
find the report this year
one of the most encouraging
that has [--b--] ever been made
There will be a large num-

ber of additions to the church
I am sure and the con-
tributions will be much
larger. The three churches
that I have, have received
on examination 19 new
members - the second
church 53 in all. I
do not yet know the
number from the first
church but it will make
the whole number [--fr--]
received in all the churches
over 100 I think. Our
mission force is larger
and we shall be able
to extend our borders --
We do not get money
yet for our new church
at Sz-Pai-Lan. I hope

it may come after awhile.
They are going ahead now
with the new building at
the hospital. An appropriation
of $2000- was granted
[--lasted--] last week by the
Medical Missionary Asso-
ciation. They calculate
the whole expense of the
building will be $5000. Of
this Dr Williams gives
$1500- The Mission here give
$500 from the local fund.
The old material is estima-
ted at $500- and the
Second church have raised
$500- making in all
$5000-. I suppose the
building will now be commenced

very soon ---- We have
had a very long season of
dry weather this year.
Until the past few days it
has scarcely rained at all
since last August or per-
haps the middle of September.
But not it is getting to
be cloudy wEather which
is probably the beginning of
the wet season. I will be
very glad to see things
looking green again- I hope
by the time this reaches home
Edward will be a great deal
better + Mattie too. It has
been a rather trying year for
you at home -- Bella got a
letter from her sister Mrs Brown
last mail saying that she was much
better which I was glad to hear - She regards
her improved health as a direct answer to prayer
