Canton Nov 14th 1882
Dear Father
I have not your
last letter by me but I know
that you have written to me
since I have to you. I remember
in your last that you said
that it was becoming more dif-
ficult for you to hear which I
was very sorry to learn--- We
arrived here last Friday evening
having been five days on the
way from San-Ui whereas we
can ordinarily make the journey
in 2 1/2 days and sometimes
in [--the--] 2 days. But our boat
was not well manned and
we had strong head winds.
We had a very pleasant
time in our little house at
San-Ui and hope good was

a few applied for baptism
but seem hardly well enough
instructed to make an intelligent
profession of Christianity and
so were advised to wait
for farther instruction. I
had the communion at Sz-Pai-
Lan last Sabbath. There were
no additional members re-
ceived. We have been busy
yesterday and to-day getting
ready for a trip up the West
River. We are all going. The country
seems to agree with us. Bella
has improved in health and
feels very well. Willie is
full of life. Richard Varnum
was not very well but is
feeling much better and is
getting a famous appetite. We
expect to go beyond the borders
of the Kwangtung province

and go some distance into
Kwang-Si . The people there
are not very favorable to
Mission work but I hope
we shall be able to do
something. We have to begin
in a gradual way - make
trips now and then and
hope eventually to get some
stations located. Mr White
and Dr Thomson have just
left for Lin-Chau. Mr Fulton
lived up there in a boat from
the End of March to the end of
September. Those who have
gone now expect to live in
the chapel. They have left their
wives in Canton. They will
probably stay some four months.
The people in that place are
not unfriendly, but the Chief

magistrate of the place is un-
friendly and has ways and
means of prevEnting them from
getting a place to live in.
There has been more than
usual sickness in Canton this fall
owing possibly to the long absence
of rain. The people have been very
anxious to have it rain in order
that the rice should head out well.
But the rain has not come and
I fear there will be a good deal
of distress on account of the poor
crop. ---- We missed while away
a large number of visitors to Canton
especially some missionaries for
Siam who were passing through.
Tell Mary I was glad to get
her good long letter. I would have
Enjoyed very much being present
at the meeting of Presbytery at Seville.
Am glad Mary gets along with her
school so well. Now I must say
good bye for this time. With love from
Bella + the children as well as myself to you
all Your aff son Henry
