Canton June 1st 1883
Dear Em
You ought to have had
a letter on your birth day
nearly a month ago. I have
thought a number of times
this month about your's and
Clara's birth days coming this
month but did not get letters
written, so I am going to
write to you both this after-
noon of the first day of summer.
It is warm enough to begin
summer with. The thermometer
is standing at 87° this minute
in the parlor and up stairs I
presume it would be up to
90°. The last letter I received
was from Edward. He had
just been attending the meeting
of Presbytery in Jackson and
said that you were with him

on that occasion. I was glad
to get the news that he
wrote to me in regard to
the meeting. Dr Taylor's fun
with the little boy brought
vividly to my [?ming?] some
things that I used to see
Wallace Ross do. I wonder
if you would like to know what
we have been doing here
this forenoon. It is the
Friday before Dr Happer's com-
munion which is always
appointed as a day of
prayer for the schools.
There were about 50 boys
present, and a good many
girls, so that the chapel
was quite well filled. Dr
Happer had asked me to speak

this morning, so I took for
the basis of my remarks
Zechariah 8:5. I tried
to impress upon the minds
of the children that there
are two Jerusalems the
earthly and the heavenly
and as the prophet represents
that in the one then were
old men [--and--] women
and little boys and girls
so it is in the other . I
tried to point out some of
the differences between the
two Jerusalems. I hope they
may remember some of
what was said. Bella
took William and Richard
over. Willie was able to

tell me something about the
sermon but I preached
Richard to sleep. He is a
bright little fellow however
and people seem to think
he has a very interesting
face. I wish we could
get a good picture of him
but we have never been
able to yet. It would be
better still if you could see
the little boy himself. We
were all down to Dr Graves
yesterday and the little
boys had great fun
with Mr Simmon's dog.
The Simmons' [--left--] live next
door to Dr Graves. We were
there a week ago and the chil-
dren then got acquainted with
the dog. With love from all to you all
Your aff Bro, Henry.
