-The Conference meets at our house next Wednesday-
Canton June 1st 1883
Dear Clara
When I take up my
pen to write to any of you
at home I always take it for
granted that I am in your
debt. I hope it is not too late
to send my good wishes for you
[--on--] for your birthday now past some
ten days I have been telling
[?Sun?] what I have been doing
to-day , and for lack of any-
thing better to write, I will
tell you what I do on our or-
dinary days. I have a new
program, as I am doing
more teaching this year
than heretofore. I get up
in the morning anywhere
from five to six-o-clock.
At six I have a cup of tea
and toast or bread and a
couple of [--boild--] boiled Eggs
which it only takes a few
minutes to dispose of- then
I spend from 1/2 past 6 to
8 in my own school and
the hour from 8 to 9 in
teaching in Dr Happer's school.
I thus get my teaching done
by 9-o-clock besides having
about an hour to study
usually before 1/2 past 6 -
so that I get a good day
in the study. On Thursday's
and Sabbaths I go to
Sz-Pai-Lan. I am still
at work on the revision
of the colloquial New Testament
When I get through with
that I am expecting to
prepared the Pentateuch for
printing in colloquial. My
teacher has nearly finished
changing it from book lan-
guage into colloquial. Then
I shall have to go over it
carefully and make a good
many changes as he does
not always get the exact
meaning although he does
very wEll-- I suppose
Mrs Happer is at home
before this time and has
already been to the General
Assembly. You will see
her no doubt sometime while
she is at home. I suppose
you will hear that Miss
Butler has just heard of
the death of her father. He
was almost 86 years old
and had been in the
ministry fifty years. Mrs
Kerr has not been feeling
very well for the past
few days. With that exception
the Missionaries are about as
usual. Dr Kerr's strength
seems to be giving way some
what-- The White's + Thomsons
are up in Lien-Chau living
in boats. Placards have
recently been put out by the
gentry forbidding the people to
rent to them without permission
from the officials (which of course
they [--will--] can not get) and threatening
to confiscate the property of any
one who does so and take the
life of the person himself. It
remains to be seen whether a
footing can be obtained there. At
present the doors are kept well
shut. Good bye for this time
