Title
Letter from Henry to Edward, May 18, 1883
Subject
Reading (Early childhood); Sabbath schools; Missionaries
Description
Henry writes to Edward and says that Willie has taken up reading more often. He uses the "Jacobs Reader," which was bought from Mrs. Graves who got it from the estate of a Chinese man. Henry is glad that Edward's limb is improving. He hopes that Edward's Sabbath School in Guilford is doing well and plans to make a report of his mission work to him soon.

Dear Bro Edward,
It is about time
I was beginning my letter for
home as it is after 9-o-clock
P M and the letters must
go in the morning. I used
to get up and write letters
in the morning but now
I get up and teach my
scholars so I must get
my letters finished this evening
Willie has only been in
bed a little time. He likes to
read in the evening and
we like to encourage, so
one or the other of us generally
reads to him, or hears him
spell- mostly Bella is getting
Richard to sleep so he likes to
have her rock him to
sleep, and I take Willie. He
never seemed to care very
much about learning to
read himself until about
two weeks ago, although for
a long time he has very
much liked to have some
one read to him. For
the last two weeks however
he has got quite into the
spirit of [--hav--] learning to
read for himself. If he
sees me sitting down at
leisure in the day time
he is quite likely to come
around with his book
and want to spell and
as soon as the lamp is
lit he wants his book. He
has been getting along
nicely, & if he keeps up
his interest & diligence
he will read considerable
before very long and without
making a task of it [--all at--]
at all. He has a new
Reader that they use in
California "Jacobs Reader". We
bought it of Mrs Graves. It
had belonged to a Chinaman
returned from California. He
had died & Mrs G was selling
his books for the benefit of
his family. I was glad
to hear from the last
letters from home that
your limb was still im-
proving. I hope by this time
that it is still much
better. At last accounts
you had been up in the
woods one day sawing
wood with Mr Hull and
could get up into the hay
mow and throw down the
hay. I hope to hear
farther good news too in
regard to the Guilford
church, hope you are
having a good Sabbath
School this summer.
I believe I promised
once to send you my report
of Mission work [--made--] under
my care, made for last year
but have never done it. If
I get time will try to do it
yet. With love from Bella & the
children & myself Your aff Bro
Henry.
[Continued vertically on the first page]
Willie came to [--axe--] axe in his lesson. He had seen it ax before
the picture was large and [?a?] axe is a large axe, a tiny
little ax is
just ax no
more.
