Letter from Hattie to the "Dear Ones at Home", December 1889

Erysipelas; Congresses and conventions; Women authors; Girls' schools

Harriet writes to her family at home. She is glad to know that Edward is feeling better and tells him to take his medicine, Em as well, so as not to get erysipelas again. She has been asked to write a paper for the Shanghai Conference on Girls Schools. Martha, Dr. Kerr, and Miss Butler may also attend the conference. She talks about their own conference that they had and the food that they prepared.

Dear Ones at Home- Dec 1889.
This is mail morning
there was so long a time between
the steamers that I thought
I would write a great deal
but have not .and this morn
I will write a little to you all
together Your letters written the
last of October came a few
days since .I am so glad
that Edward had recovered
Now he must be sure and take
that medicine and Em also
so that they will never have
erysipelas again. I have
something on hand that I do not
much enjoy and that is to
write a paper for the Shanghai
Conference on Girls Schools.
I found the letter from the
committee asking me to do
it awaiting me when I

reached here last March.
I hoped to write the paper
during the summer vacation
but did not get it done. Now
I [u]must[/u] go to work and do it
for they are to be sent in
before the end of December.
I feel quite at sea about it
but hope I shall be able to
write something that will pass
muster and be what should
be written .The papers are to
be published in advance and
not read at the Conference
as that would take too much
time . The writer of each paper
is to have ten minutes to present
the views of the paper and
introduce the discussion on
the subject . I have always
thought that I would attend
this Conference but I hardly
expect to perhaps I may.
Dr Kerr and Martha

expect to go. and perhaps Miss
Butler may . Miss Lewis is
planning to go over to California
next summer to be away four
months. Miss Butler has had
quite a sick spell but is getting
better now. and I have had
a bad cold but am also
recovering. We both felt
rather miserable last week
when we had the Conference.
It was a large conference we
set the tables for seventy but
there were only forty nine
who came. Shall I give you
the bill of fare.Boiled Ham roasted
chicken and mutton biscuits and
butter , fruitcake , nut cake
lemon tarts and pumpkin
tarts. Miss Butler got up
out of bed to make cake
she had set her heart on
doing it. and it was a relief

to me. I helped her all I
could . The cakes were all very
nice there were three of each
kind .We do not think it is
very necessary to have so much
[u]eating[/u] but it is the fashion here.
The Conference was pronounced
a grand success . we had the
meeting in the school chapel
and the house was devoted to
eating purposes .had a long
table in each room the parlor, study
and dining room. Dr Graves
had the paper subject "Training
native [?converts?]." Henry made
a good speech, the [u]best[/u] and
was cheered warmly. He is
appreciated here .Miss Lewis + Miss
Butler say it seems to them
that he is the mission . He
looked very nice and she
was right beside him
it seems evident that she is
going to keep him very close at
Fa ta . I think she must be
