A conversion took place at San-Ui, and three others have expressed devotion elsewhere. France negotiates with China but Henry has heard that war is probable. Dr. Happer is still ill and Hattie is in Macao with Mrs. Thomson. One of Henry's scholars died, a non-Christian whose sister is a convert. The Chinese grow less tolerant of French people in the country.

Dear Bro Edward
I have just got home
from a three weeks trip in the
country, and have only a few
minutes to write bEfore the mail
goes. For some reason I have
had not letter from home for
the two last mails. I presume
they must have missed getting
through. Bella tells me that
Em sent a book I think for
the children. I have not yet had
time to look at the mail but
the children as well as their parents
send best thanks. I had on
the whole a very good time in
the country although it was pretty
hot. One man was received
into the church at San-Ui. There
were no baptisms at other places
excepting a child at the new
station. Three however have expressed
their full purpose to serve Jesus
as long as they live. They will
doubtless be baptized the next trip

if the state of the country is
so that I can make the trip.
I have only had time to
look at the telegrams of the
last two papers since I got
back but judging from [?these?]
things look pretty "squally" The
French seem to have presented
an ultimatum which the
Chinese refuse. The telegram
says "war probable". I feel worst
of all for the Chinese Christians
I do not know what will become
of them in case of war. I fear
they will be exposed to great
danger, but the Lord knows how
to take care of his own. He
knows too how to bring about
peace if it his will --
Dr Happer is still very
unwell but I believe is thought
to be some better. I [--pr--] presume
Hattie has written that she is
in Macao with Mrs Thomson and
the other young ladies - that is
Miss Butler + Miss Lewis + Dr Niles.
One of my scholars died

while I was in the country. He
had been sick for a number
of days before I left and had
gone to the Hospital. I hoped
he would recover .He had been
in school since the beginning of
the year. He was not a professing
christian. His older sister is a
Christian. --
I find in the country a
strong feeling in the part of
many of the people against the
French. They told me at once
place that if I were a
Frenchman they would beat me
The people feel that they are so
numerous that they ought to
beat all the French who could
be sent out here but with their
poor military knowledge I fear
it would fare hard with them -
They had better have maintained
the treaty that had been agreed
upon -- We have been living
in suspense for more than a
year, and it would seem a
great relief to have things

settled once more- The Lord
has his own plans to accomplish
and will no doubt do what
is right-- The boy is waiting
to take this to the office and
so I will close, sending
much love from us all to
you all
Your Aff Bro
