Title

Letter from Henry to Em, March 8, 1887

Subject

School buildings; Christian scholars; Viceroys; Bible--Versions

Description

Henry writes to Emily having opened a new school. Thirty-three scholars have enrolled, but he says the building is small. The Tsung li Yamun has declared protection of Christians in North and Central China, but the Viceroy does not always enforce this. Henry and the others acquired a place in Chik Liu, which they tried to donate to the Wesleyans but were refused. Bella is working on a Bible translation.

Canton March 8th 1887
Dear Em
I sit down a few
minutes after dinner to write
for the mail that is going this
afternoon. I expect you can
sympathize with school teaching
experiences so I will write a
little about these matters. Our
school here opened last week
[--Mu--] Wednesday, and so has
not been opened a week yet.
The scholars came in very well
about 33 enrolled the first day
so that I have no doubt we
shall have all we can attend
to this year. Wish the school
building was larger. I have
succeeded in getting a very
good teacher who has a much
better faculty of discipline
than [--the--] any I have had
before. It makes me feel
a good deal less care in
regard to the order of the school

I should think you would
find enough to do with the
number of scholars you
have on hand. We have
not yet succeeded in getting
a place for a new building
but are still on the search.
Mr Fulton & Dr Swan
have recently returned from
a trip up to Kwang Si. They
found the people at Kwai Ping
very unpleasant. In fact
they did not go on shore to
stay so that it looks as though
they would have a difficult
matter getting settled there
again. Perhaps after awhile
there will be a change in
the state of feeling. In general
there does not seem now
to be so strong opposition to
the gospel in the region round
about [--there--] here as there was
a year or two ago. Several

proclamations have been put
out in Central & Northern China
requiring that Christian's should
be protected and not put
to any inconvenience on
account of their profession
of Christianity. The proclamation
was ordered to be put out by
the Tsung li Yamun at Peking
and I suppose it is the duty of
the Viceroy here to issue one
but he does not by any means
always perform his duty.
I forget whether I wrote
in my last letter anything
about Chik Liu a station round
30 miles North of Canton. It
is the first place in the country
that I visited after coming to
China, [--at--] When I went home
I turned it over to Mr Henry
& when he went he left it with
Mr Fulton. When Mr Henry
came back he thought it was not

worth while to keep it, and
we offered it to the Wesleyans
but after inspection they said they
did not want it
Just now there seems
to be [--a--] very good encouragement
A young man from the school
and a member of the 3d
church went up there in
vacation. He got a school
started which has 86 scholars
in the day-time and then
an evening school for grown
people who come in greater or
less number as they have
leisure or feel disposed. Some
come to learn and some to
[?dispilt?] but the opportunity for
making the gospel known is what
it has not been before in that
region and I hope will result
in good.
Now I must close
[--I have--] the children are in usual
health. Bella is here in the
study working away at the translation
of Dr [Illegible] Kings [Illegible]. Hoping
father is better of his bad cold & that you
are all well. Your aff Bro
Henry
