Dear Em
I think you wrote
to me a while ago and will
probably expect an answer after
awhile. The only letter I have
received from home at this
place was one from Matt in
which she gave me details of
her visit to Hayesville which
I was glad to get, although it
seems now a good while since
our school days at old ver-
million. I suppose one mail
has gone from Canton since
we wrote last, but down here
we do not know the time
when the steamers leave Hong-
Kong and send a letter to
Canton occasionally and let it
go on by next steamer. The
means of communication from
here to Canton are passage
boats. One leaves Kong Mum,
which is six miles from here,
every day, and a boat goes
from here to meet it. The
time is about two days
but we are not sure of
letters being very promptly de-
livered. We got our last mail
about a week ago and
expect another one in the
course of a few days.
I do not know
whether I told you in my
last anything about our
house here. It was built
last summer and is partly
a school house and partly
a dwelling house. Our part
is about 14 [--weet--] feet wide
and 30 deEp, is built of
brick with a tile roof. The
bricks are whitewashed in the
inside of the house, and the
tiles overhead also. A wooden
partition some 7 feet high
divides the whole into two
rooms, while the upper part
is open from one end to
the other for [?pure?] circulation
of air. One room is our
bedroom, and the other is
dining room, sitting room,
parlor, and study combined.
The weather is not hot, al-
though we might call it
some of the time quite
warm. We manage to
live very comfortably in
our quarters and enjoy it.
We have seen since being
here Mr Grundy of the English
Church Mission who passed
through in one of his trips
and will be returning
next week-- also Dr [?Nenyon?]
+ his family passed through
two days ago. Mr Fulton
expects to come down for
us the first of next month
so we shall see in all
several foreigners while here.
The house is so located
that by going out a door
at the back part of the
yard we can go away
to the hills without passing
any houses after leaving our
premises, and so while one
side of the premises where
the chapel is, [--sh--] is on
a very good street, we can
