San-Ui Oct 6th 1882
Dear Bro Edward
I thought about
writing to you on last Sat-
urday which I remembered
was your birth-day but was
tolerably busy. There was how-
ever another reason why I did
not write. I wished to send
you some account of what
I was doing on the day at
Chik-Hom. As you will
see by the date of this letter
we are not now in Canton
but at San-Ui. We have a
small house here built her
during. the latter part of summer.
You will not think it a
very extravagantly built house
when I tell you that the whole
building cost less than $200-
and furnishes room for a
boys school as well as
quarters for us to live in.
The boys school is the
larger half. Our part however
makes us a much more
comfortable place to live than
a boat, in fact we get along
nicely. It consists of two
rooms, one of which is our
bed room and the other
a dining room and sitting
room where we live. There
is a small piece of ground
in front of it and it will
make us a pleasant little
residence at any time in
the cool part of the year.
I am now sitting just out-
side the front door (which is
the only door) in a bamboo
chair which cost 25 cents, and
find the cool morning air de-
lightful. We expect to be here
about a month. I have a
class of assistants under in-
struction and preaching in the
chapel. Bella has a Bible woman
with whom she goes every day to
make visits among the women.
I think we shall have a very
pleasant and I hope profitable
time. ------ But I commenced
to tell you what I was doing
Saturday at Chik-Hom. I was
engaged with the Chinese
christians there in the or-
ganisation of a new church
Three months ago when I
was there we talked the matter
over and concluded it would
be a good thing. We made
out a list of 19 names who
would naturally belong there and
so appointed Sept 2=30th as the
day on which to meet at
two-o-clock in the afternoon.
Two elders were elected and
ordained and one interesting
circumstance[--s--], which you would
appreciate more if you knew
hard it was to get the Chinese
started to contribute for church
purposes, was that in the
evening money was paid in
and the native preacher's
salary paid for the month
of September and also for
two months in advance. They
have also money enough on hand
to pay the rent of their chapel
up to the end of the year.
I hope they will continue to
do as well in which case
they will be self supporting
from the beginning. A number
of the principal members have
promised to give one-tenth
of their income. If we only
had our ordained Chinese
preacher then the church
would be complete without
foreign help. For the present I
must be nominally the Pastor
or stated Supply --
