Description

Henry writes to Mary that he is surprised to be getting mail from America. He was hoping to get news from Japan on how Bella and the children have been doing. He has been living on his own for the last two weeks and he's been quite lonely, although the dog has been keeping him company. Henry has seen Martha two or three times since being back from Hong Kong; she still looks tired and has doctors around her.

Canton May 13th 1887
Dear Mary
I presume you will be at
home before this letter gets there or
soon after, if not there. I was fully
expecting to get the mail from America
this morning but it did not come.
I was looking for it with all the more
interest as I expect it will bring news
from Japan as to how Bella & the
children got along to that point, they
would have left letters for this steamer.
Then as neither Mattie or I got any letters
from home by last mail we are anxious
to hear. I have been living now just
two weeks alone but it seems longer than
that. It seems quite lonesome after having
company so long. Pew Dash was some
company for awhile as he had always
been with us in the house a good deal
so much so that we were accustomed
to say he was one of the family [?our?] children
too had played with him a great deal.
After I came back from Hongkong he
was always with me following me
about the house wherever I went, going
out with me to [Note: piece of page missing]
[--ver--] whenever I sat [Note: piece of page missing]

a boys school at [?Lin Ha Tui?] but neither had ever been
known here as the Frank S Williams school. I told him
of a school designated at home though not here as the
Frank S Williams school I thought she could give him
information about it. I wonder whether Mr Notestine
got over his severe illness. It will seem such a pity
if from over-work the Church should lose his services
We are having quite cool weather this spring. In fact
I am wearing flannel clothing yet have not had
the regular orthodox summer white suit on but [Note: piece of page missing]
and then did not need to wear it on account of [Note: piece of page missing]
heat. I find plenty to do. It seems as if I could [Note: piece of page missing]
quite catch up with my work, but I suppose weak that [Note: piece of page missing]
there is not time to do does not need to be done. The [Note: piece of page missing]
school has 47 enrolled, all members still but are who left
to day to study medicine. You can imagine that my build [Note: piece of page missing]

and stay by my side. He even slept
by my bed & sometimes waked me
up to say good morning by coming
and putting his nose on the outside
of my musquito curtain against my
face. Last Sunday I went into the
Ha Kau Chapel at 2-o-clock and
left him at home here but have
not seen him since. I found out
he was seen on Shameen. He used
to go there sometimes with the children
I expect after I went away he felt
lonesome and went over there and
some Chinaman stole him. He was
a very pretty dog & I suppose they could
sell him very well.
Before I forget it I will
mention that I will enclose a letter
from Washington D C written by
Charles B Bailey. I have answered
his letter this afternoon telling him
that I knew of no school by that
name. I mentioned that the
New York are Ch Washington had
supported a girls school here and
that some one [Illegible] men in
Washington had I thought [Note: piece of page missing]

is packed. If many more come
I am going to take some of them into the
house. People who travel in the country
all speak of the friendly feeling of the people
The [?swimmers?] come back from the West river
very much pleased. Mr Fulton is just
back from a month spent about Shek Lung
and seems to have had a very good
time. There is evidently a different state
of feeling from the bitterness of the past two
or three years. I have been to see
Mattie two or three times since I came
back from Hongkong. She has not been
very well since she came back
from Macao, looks tired but I tell
her she has plenty of doctors around
her. The Doctor she thinks the most
of tells her she must keep quiet. I
presume she will be better in a few days
You will have seen Bella & the children before
this reaches you I suppose and enjoyed
their visit. How much I would like to have
seen them going around at the old home.
I have thought a great deal about them during
their long voyage. It is about time
the letters were sent so I must say good bye
The Henry's are still in Macao. Helen
is improving but very slowly.
Love to you all from
Your aff Bro
Henry.

[Continued vertically on the first page]
Mail just arrived. Have no time to write more than that
I know dear precious Mother has gone home. God bless and
comfort you all
Henry
