Description

Henry writes to Mary about Willie being excited about her letter. Now Willie plans on writing a letter to his grandpa. Richard called the dog a bad dog because he plays on sunday and the cat is a naughty cat because it ripped up the bible. Henry just heard of the death of Dr Damon in Honolulu. This came as a surprise because he had hardly been ill at all. The Missionary Conference took plaec in Dr Happer's house last week and went well. Henry has been teaching and working on the Colloquial translation of the New Testamen from Romans to Revelation at the school.

Canton April 4th 1885

Dear Mary
It is your turn
to get a letter and it so happens
that I got one from you by the
last mail. Willie listened with
much interest to your letter to him.
Last night he was talking about
father and I told him he was
hard of hearing and so when I
was at home I had to talke quite
[--loud--] loud to make him hear.
Willie thought a minute and then
said "I could write a letter and
then he would know what I wanted
to say". I told him that I thought
his grandpa would be very much
pleased to get a letter-- Now I
have started about the children I
must tell you a little about Richard
Varnum. One day he said quite
seriously "Jack (our dog's name) is a
bad dog" "He plays on Sunday"--
"He plays with the cat" A day or
[Note: Page ripped] the cat. And he

said "She is a naughty cat."
I asked him why .He said "Be-
cause she tears the Bible" The Bible
(a large one) had been lying open
on the writing desk a few days
before and kitty had torn one
of the leaves with her paws.
Notwithstanding his disparaging
opinion of character of the dog
and the cat he yEt seems to think
a great deal of them---
We have just heard
of the death of Dr Damon, at
Honolulu, Mo-Hing who had
preaching in the Sandwich Islands
for about two years returned
to this place yesterday and
brought the news. He attended the
funeral the day before he lEft.
He said there was a very large
number present at the funeral
among whom was the kind.
He had always been well
had hardly been ill at all for
forty years. His last illness
was of about three weeks
duration. I suppose Verdie
Happer will get [Note: Page torn]

Dr + Mrs Happer will get the
news, or rather have already got
it at San Francisco I suppose.
It will be sad news for them.
Dr Damon was a very pleasant
genial man and we all enjoyed
his visit in Canton very much.
It will be very hard for his
wife who is of course getting quite
old, but she has her children
about her in Honolulu ---
The Missionary Conference
was held at Dr Happer's house
last Wednesday and passed off
very pleasantly. Miss Baird has
gone to Macao, and as Dr Thom-
son is also just now in Macao
Dr Niles is most of the the time at
the Hospital so that Verdie has
the large house pretty much to
herself --
Mr White is away in
the country visiting the stations
that I used to visit. He is
taking charge of them this year.
I find plenty to do here in
Canton - [Note: page torn] was never
The Training School

has come over to this school
house and I am carrying
it and the Boy's Boarding
school under one general
arrangement. Bella has the
small boys every day in
Bible stories and Mr White
the young men in the explan-
ation of the Scriptures and
I am teaching-- Just now
I am working at the Colloquial
translation of the New Testament
from Romans to Revelation-
It would have been done a long
time ago if it had not needed
to be looked over by Dr Happer
but it was lying in his hands
and nothing done. When he
left he passed all that has been
done over to me and I am
trying to get it through as fast
as possible. Romans is already done
and about half of 1st Corinthians. I
hope it will all get to press in
the course of 3 or 4 months more
Now I must close ----
Love to all [Note: Page torn] all

I am glad you like your school so well. I am sure you are
doing your part wEll or you would not enjoy it---

Happer

Dr + Mrs Happer
Niles
